Last year in June I had gone to hospital with chest pains. I was given xray, then CT Scan. Was asked if I was having difficulty in passing water as my bladder was full. I said that had had no problems. They inserted catheter and I was sent for an MRI Scan. All this happened within 3 hrs. Was kept in overnight. I was then asked to call my daughter to come along to the hospital. IWe were told later that day which was my 60th birthday that I had Kidney Cancer and also a growth on my left ovary. My life was then taken over by further scans, blood tests, consultations. Surgery took place in September to remove my left kidney. Was told that I didn't need any further treatment. I would have follow up scans and bloods every 6 months. The growth on my ovary was shown to be non cancerous, but they would keep an eye on it and also have 6 months checks. The checks for the ovary are still ok. I went for a CT Scan in February this year. Waited over 4 weeks for the results and had a call from my consultant, He told me the cancer hadn't spread in that area. He then said that co incidentially a growth has shown up on my right lung and I was being referred to the Lung specialist and would be seen in the next 2 weeks. I am in total shock and bewilderment as was not prepared for anything like this to happen.

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about the new diagnosis that is going on.

From my 21+ years on my blood cancer journey the road is full of twists and turns, some twists do tend to be issues that need to be treated but others turn out to be false alarms, so let’s look for this for you.

I was so unwell I don’t remember my 60th....so we celebrated it a year on ;) but it goes to show how life can change so quickly.

A number of years ago I had something show up on my lung during a regular CT, a biopsy was done and found to be minor asbestos but it’s not a problem that needs any treatment.

A few years later another issue showed up on my lung but after some investigations it was seen to be a small none cancer node that we keep watchful eye on.

I have always found talking with others who are walking the same type of journey will help you navigate this challenging time. The Community is organised into dedicated support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Lung, secondary cancer group, this will be a good place to connect with patients and families navigating the same type of cancer journey.

To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
