I have been discharged from 2 week stay in hospital with 2 Nephrostomies on the condition I drink plenty of fluids & monitor my intake & outtake, I been advised to drink 5000 mls a day, seems excessive and was worried about loosing electrolytes & sodium.
Hi maron. I have had nephrostomys fitted since 1st September. I find them very uncomfortable but necessary. The advice I was given was to monitor intake / outtake and drink plenty. They never said how much fluid to drink. I have a home nurse visit regularly to check everything OK, change bags etc. Do you have a nurse visit? It may be worth asking? I'm Not really answering your question but hang in there. Best wishes.

Thank you Vikki,Very kind of you to respond so quickly, like you was told on discharge to drink plenty, had a phone call from the team yesterday and was advised to drink 5000 mls which is pretty hard to do. I Have a Hospital review appointment on Monday & District Nurse visit on Tuesday. My concern was while in hospital I had IV fluids & jugs of water day & night, then I had IV fluids containing electrolytes & Sodium.
ah only 2 days to go so hopefully no great harm to my body.
It does seem like a lot. Try to drink what you can and ask plenty of questions at your appointment. I hate having these things in, it's a struggle to do day to day things or even sleep but I think they are helping. Hope they do for you too. Stay safe, best wishes.

Hi Vikki, it’s my husband who has Nephrostomies (anti technology!) How do you carry your Nephrostomies Bags, hubby carries his in a carrier bag!as you say it’s terrible trying to do day to day things, Sorry you not sleeping well, hubby in the middle of double bed with bags hanging over either side.hope all goes well with you take care M x
I have mine attached to leg bags that strap around my calfs although I can disconnect them when I shower etc. I'm still unable to lie flat as I find it uncomfortable so at the minute I'm sleeping in my chair. I've never been brave enough to leave the house with them in yet. Working up the courage for that this week for appointments.
Hi Vikki, ah you have them strapped to your calf that sounds better than carrying them in a bag, hubby wasn’t given that option, sorry another question how do you cover your Tube insertion into your back when you Shower, I suggested various options, he worried about getting wet & infection. Stay safe & fingers crossed all goes well at your appointment M xx
I was worried about the same thing. Speak to the nurse they will advise better than me. In my case I have 2bags over the tubes at the back which I can disconnect from the leg bags to shower. Providing I don't shower for too long they are usually fine and fully waterproof. It is a tricky process though and I'm still trying to master it. X
