Hi,
I’ve been following this group since March but for some reason my join request had not been approved so I couldn’t post anything. That got sorted out today.
I can see this is a hugely supportive group and hope I can add to that.
whilst you can read my bio for detail a quick summary would be:
63,
Jan 2022 stage 4 stomach cancer, prognosis less than a year.
Jan 2022 1st op (aborted, complications), prognosis reaffirmed and initially told no chemo and no op palliative only.
Following further review and quick recovery from op Chemo agreed.
Jun 2022 2nd Op - successful but post op historology not great
Adjuvant Chemo completed Oct 22
Dec 22 to Jan 25 in great health, not a single days illness, got a new job (mistake should have retired then)
Jan 25 very ill, tests confirmed cancer metastasised to soft tissue in abdomen and affecting liver. Prognosis less than a year, palliative care only. Onc offered Chemo but assessed would add 2 to 3 months at best which I declined. Immediately stopped working.
So far just getting liver related symptoms which are not frequent and I would describe as mild. Managing to get insurance and do some travelling and still golfing 2 to 3 times a week albeit usually followed by fatigue.
I have already made my peace with the situation, hardest part is not knowing what comes next or when so as most of you know it’s about living for the day, I’ve always been about moving forward so I make plans on the basis I will still be OK when that day arrives so July and August already looking pretty full.
I am fortunate to have a wonderful supportive family and circle of friends so feel truly blessed.
I have been looking into alternative medicines so would welcome any discussion from others who have also looked at that. I have been having Reiki through Sue Ryder and Sound baths privately both of which I find very beneficial. I take mushroom supplements and I think they have alleviated the symptoms I have been having. I am currently looking into the medicinal qualities of Beetroot.
Well done to anyone who has persevered and read the whole post, I do tend to say/write a lot once I get started.
I’m looking forward to contributing when I can from my experience and outlook. I have read many of the posts and my heart goes out to those who are having a tougher time than me, thank you for creating those posts as they help me keep my current situation in perspective and to prepare myself for what will ultimately come along.
Regards
Les
Hi Les
Chris here, male 48. Sorry to hear your story, I’m in a similar situation, was diagnosed with stomach/oesophageal cancer back in Feb 23, chemo and then op to remove stomach and part of oesophagus and was ok for a year and then it spread to my biliary ducts as well as evidence in several lymph nodes. Despite having two stents fitted and being on chemo/immuno I still have a decent quality of life so happy for that. I’m looking to do one last trip away, but because I was only given 12 months prognosis back in October last year I’m finding it difficult to get anyone to cover me…please could I ask who you are using as ideally don’t want to risk going without?
Thanks
Chris
Hi Chris, Nice to meet you but sorry it isn’t somewhere else. There is an actual Post here of information about Holiday/Travel Insurance. Hopefully one of the Community Champions will see this and send you a link. A lot depends on where you want to go. Some companies won’t do cruises, long haul etc. we have been lucky and the companies we have been with are MIA Travel,
The most recent insurancewith actually does Annual Insurance. You have to call them, this can’t be done online. Remember no one says terminal they say incurable but treatable, if you are on any treatment. The first time I tried to get covered for 4 weeks in Spain, I was quoted £9,000 I just laughed and put the phone down! I was on my 12th call when I found MIA. Good Luck. I know people say they may not be honest and go anywhere but I couldn’t do that, I don’t think it’s worth it!

Hi Chris, nice to meet you our situations sound similar, I used insurancewith and despite being a bit pricy found them very good they focus on your condition now so if you’re only having minor and manageable symptoms you should be ok. I could only get mainland Europe so no islands even if it has its own hospitals and airport. If you’re going to try them it’s a bit of a waste of time ringing as they have an on line appointment booking system. I think you need to use the online system to put your trip and personal details in then when it sees you have cancer it will prompt you to book a screening appointment with their medical people. Hope that helps mate, let me know how you get on, chat again soon as Zi have to dash.

Nice to meet you too Annette and yes definitely! I actually used insurewith after I’d had my op and post radio and they were the most competitive by far. For some reason I had it in my head that they were one of those that fell into the category that if you were expected less than 6 months they wouldn’t provide cover, but have been back on this morning and filled in the form and am getting a call back to discuss further, so fingers crossed!
Hi Les
Nice to meet you too. As above I didn’t think insurewith would provide cover but now know this may be possible. Will update when I’ve had my call. I’m expecting a hefty premium for my troubles, but as long as it falls within my reasonable levels then I’m happy to pay for that assurance, as you never know what’s around the corner with our type of illness!
Chris
Hi Chrisdon, Any news back from the insurance company yet. Please remember never use the word “terminal” always use “incurable but treatable” They are developing new drugs for different types of cancer monthly!
Love Annette x
Hi Annette
I’ve got a call from the insurewith medical team between 8-10 this morning so fingers crossed. Spoke to my Oncologist yesterday and she gave me the fit to fly and said go for it, so that’s nice to know. Just hope they a) offer me insurance and b) it’s not an extortionate price. Will update later
Chris
