New to the group and inspired by the togetherness of the group. Lovely to see there's support.

Hi everyone,

I have been muddled up with this site on my phone and have messaged in wrong groups so I apologise if you've read this before.

I am 39 years old and have recently been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma cancer with multiple brain and lung metastasis. Obviously this was a shock and hearing the words we can "only try to prolong your life" was hard to digest.

I had a 2.9mm nodular malignant melanoma removed from my upper back in 2018. I had wide local excision and sentinel node biopsy which came back negative. Unfortunately 3 years on during a routine head scan for my eye check the brain tumours were found and the rest followed.

I've had 5 sessions of full brain radiotherapy and have currently had one round of immunotherapy Opdivo(Nivolumab) and Yervoy(lpilimumab), my next round is on the 28th of June.

I have always been a positive person and that is not going to change. I have to believe that miracles can happen. I am the proud dad of 7 year old twin boy's. My boy's were born prematurely on 24weeks gestation, they had a horrendous start to life spending many months in intensive care. They're both now non-verbal autistic with severe learning difficulties but they're amazing and my absolute reason to keep going. I can't even think of not being here for them and leaving my wife to bring them up alone.

Everybody's journey is different but I hope you're all having good news with your own personal battles. Don't lose hope because as my boy's have shown me, miracles can and do happen.

Has any body had some positive news lately with immunotherapy?

All the best,

Steve

The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us, but those who win battles we know nothing about.

Hi Steve, welcome to the group, although I'm sure you'd rather not be here. You're right, loads of support, experience, and wisdom to be had here. A good place to come to chat, or just to read.

It sounds like your boys are giving you the perfect reason to be positive and to stick around. We all need something to live for.

Looking forward to seeing you around here.

    Much love,

    Stuart x

  • Welcome to the forum sorry you have a need to be here. Like everyone here im incurable however my first attempt at anti cancer meds (pazopanib , denosumab)   has caused my cancer to stop in its tracks. It had already eaten two of my vertebrae so major surgery was required  but I have now been stable for 8 months and consultants seem to think I have years not months so don’t give up hope. There are people on here being kept alive by drugs that were not available when they were diagnosed incurable. Please feel free to vent or ask any questions on here there’s usually someone that has had similar concerns or been on a similar journey

be safe, be nice, be you

  • Hi , I’ve said hello before in the melanoma group, glad you have made it over here as well. (I haven’t seen you post anything in a wrong group). I’m having my 55th Pembrolizumab on Saturday, unless saying that has jinxed it! I’m awaiting scan results due on Wednesday, I’m stage 4 metastatic melanoma but low tumour burden after a complete response to Pembro (like nivo) in 2017, but it’s been recurring and yoyoing in different groin nodes for a while. I haven’t forgotten what it was like to be told I was incurable but having had a complete response on immunotherapy once I find my mind doesn’t always want to think in terms of being incurable, as I still have a hope to be a complete responder again to immunotherapy or no evidence of disease for a while if they do surgery again. There’s no advanced melanoma group on here and I had no primary so when I was first diagnosed I gravitated to read all the supportive posts in here, I’m not a regular poster though.

I’m hoping you haven’t had any adverse affects from the immunotherapy, and I’m thinking you will have a scan in a few months so my finger and toes are crossed for a good response for you.

    Take care KT

  • Hi Steve 82, Like remoh I've become stable mabel which was a big and total surprise. I have an agressive stage 3 cancer that I fully expected was going to take me off fairly quickly - even my oncologist told me to get home and make the most of the time I had left. Now he's just as surprised as I was when the CT came back with no active cancer on it. How long this will last is anybodys guess - including the oncologist, so if I've learnt anything from being on this forum it's

    a) don't take every word the medics tell you as gospel

    b) keep being positive and live every day to the best of your ability

    c) there will always be someone on here who understands what you are going through. I've found much support and good advice since I found my way here.

    All the best Steve

  • Hi Stuart,

    Nice to hear from you.

Yeah my boy's are definitely a big reason for me to stick around.

    Take care,

    Steve

  • Great to hear your positive news Richard, long may it continue.

    Thanks for the positive message.

    Take care,

    Steve

  • Hi KT,

Nice to hear from you again.

55th( wow) that's a lot, it's great that you've had success with it and hopefully you'll have more.

Yeah I have my scan in 3 months if I have no bad side effects, I haven't after my 1st dose but it's still early days although I remain confident.

It seems quite disheartening that you can be a complete responder but it's always likely to come back. But I guess this is the way it is and it's still something we all hope for.

Good luck with your scan results, give us some good news.

    Speak soon,

    Steve

  • Hi RD,

Really glad you've had some great news.

I am living everyday like I don't have cancer apart from the reduction in alcohol ha.

My boy's keep me too busy to think of anything else.

You enjoy your positive news and enjoy yourself.

    Steve

  • Hi Popgate,

    Thanks for the welcome.

I hope you're all smiling for as long as possible.

I'm sure I'll be very grateful of the advice in future.

    Best of luck,

    Steve
