New to the group and inspired by the togetherness of the group. Lovely to see there's support.

Hi everyone,

I have been muddled up with this site on my phone and have messaged in wrong groups so I apologise if you've read this before.

I am 39 years old and have recently been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma cancer with multiple brain and lung metastasis. Obviously this was a shock and hearing the words we can "only try to prolong your life" was hard to digest.

I had a 2.9mm nodular malignant melanoma removed from my upper back in 2018. I had wide local excision and sentinel node biopsy which came back negative. Unfortunately 3 years on during a routine head scan for my eye check the brain tumours were found and the rest followed.

I've had 5 sessions of full brain radiotherapy and have currently had one round of immunotherapy Opdivo(Nivolumab) and Yervoy(lpilimumab), my next round is on the 28th of June.

I have always been a positive person and that is not going to change. I have to believe that miracles can happen. I am the proud dad of 7 year old twin boy's. My boy's were born prematurely on 24weeks gestation, they had a horrendous start to life spending many months in intensive care. They're both now non-verbal autistic with severe learning difficulties but they're amazing and my absolute reason to keep going. I can't even think of not being here for them and leaving my wife to bring them up alone.

Everybody's journey is different but I hope you're all having good news with your own personal battles. Don't lose hope because as my boy's have shown me, miracles can and do happen.

Has any body had some positive news lately with immunotherapy?

All the best,

Steve

The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us, but those who win battles we know nothing about.

  • Dear Steve you are right, amazing things can happen. It's difficult to carry on sometimes, I think we all need positive stories to help us keep going. Take care, x

  • Hi Steve, my news was mixed, apart from the results 2 nodes reducing but 3 new areas had sprung up. I got the news from the nurse as the results weren’t ready for my onc appointment. I have another appointment with the onc next week, he wants to discuss a clinical trial which is due to get a go ahead soon and look at a new plan. Surgery and radiotherapy previously mentioned now not viable, the trial is for TILs, tumour infiltrating lymphocytes. I had heard of the previous trial on TILs as it was on our local news a few years back due to the success on a patient. I later remembered and rebooked up a vlog of someone it was not so successful on. So I’m preparing all my questions for Wednesday.

How are things with you Steve?

    Take care KT

  • Hi, Steve

(This site is not easy to get on with...)

Just to say I was diagnosed with advanced stage 4b cervical cancer incurable inoperable in May 2019. On Monday (28 June), I was told (post op and further treatment - I'd already had chemo in summer 2019 and again in autumn 2020) that my latest scan is clear.

The doctors are now hoping for me. Whatever the case may be, I suddenly had this thought the other day "My cancer(s*) is / are still here, but so am I."

    * the surgeon found a completely separate cancer during the op. And removed it...

I am hoping for myself, of course, but also for you and the friends I've made through cancer treatment - all told incurable (I guess I was drawn to people who understood my predicament) and living with cancer, and hope. When you can peer through the darkness and see it...

With best wishes to you and your family

  • Hi Steve 82, I have no experience with immunotherapy, in January I was diagnosed with incurable advanced prostate Cancer which has spread to my bones and lymph nodes, also in January the female half of my wife and my best friend was diagnosed with incurable lung and brain matsis Cancer, this was a very bad time for all 4 of us, having to pass this news on to our families, was unbelievably hard, sad times, but as the months have passed and treatment is working to extend our lives we have stopped worrying about things we can't change and concentrate on our loved ones. I don't know if you have noticed but concentrating on them makes my problems go on to the back burner, your family sounds great long may you enjoy being with them, all the best.

  • Hi KT,

I hope this new treatment can help you.

I had my 2nd round of immunotherapy on Monday and I've been quite bad most of the week. Constantly burning up and also going freezing.

I've been on the couch most of the day with no energy which isn't me at all.

If i feel the same tomorrow I'm going to ring the hospital.

Wish there was a cure for us all but life isn't fair sometimes.

    Take care,

    Steve

  • Hi Ulls,

    Nice to hear from you.

Glad you've had success with your treatment and long may it continue.

I've been unwell this week from my recent immunotherapy but will keep pushing on for my family.

My boy's don't give me time to concentrate on anything else but them ha.

    Take care

    Steve

  • Hi Steve and welcome. I haven't had any experience 'yet' with immunotherapy but once things turn pear shaped, it will be my first port of call I think. There have been lots of success stories here with it over the years, so I do hope you turn out to be one of those. I believe the first few treatments leave you exhausted but things do improve once your body gets used to it! Good luck!

  • Hi KT, That sounds promising you may get Onto the TILs trial. I do remember one of the vlogs done very well by a Paramedic whose Works Team had fundraised to enable her to go on TILs, I wonder if this is the same vlog you are referring to. Although in the end it was unsuccessful it was at the very start and a lot of improvements have been made since then. Please let me know how you get on with your Oncologist!

  • Hi Steve, I was wondering how you are? I’ve never suffered from those chills and burning up sensations but quite a few have posted about these before,  so I hope your team have sorted you out, and I wanted to wish you a speedy recovery.
