Good morning everyone. I have just looked at the qualifying criteria for blue badges and wondered if any of you would share advice your experience.

i receive full Attendance Allowance because of my terminal diagnosis but understand this alone does not make me eligible for a blue badge.

I do experience breathlessness and pain when walking relatively short distances. Has anyone successfully applied for a blue badge based on their cancer symptoms or long term effects of cancer treatment?

thank you in advance

  • Hi Rosiee, I have a blue badge but although I have an incurable bone marrow cancer I also have various other illnesses so my blue badge isn't given purely because of my cancer.

It's clear that you do have a disability or disabilities so you would need to fill in a form to apply for a blue badge. Now, MacMillan can assist you with that so if you ring their helpline you will get all the assistance you need to apply for a blue badge. I have heard that they are excellent in that respect.

    The helpline number is

    Good luck Rosiee

  • Thank you for helpful advice x

  • Hi Rosiee

I got help from my local cancer drop in centre when applying for my blue badge. I hope you are successful!

  • Hi Rosiee

Do you have full PIP including mobility allowance? If so you are definitely eligible for a blue badge. I just applied via my council’s website. It requires the PIP policy number to get the blue badge.

  • PIP is only paid to people under state retirement age. Those who are of,or above state retirement age receive Attendance Allowance. I receive full AA because my illness is terminal (may die within 12 months). But (unbelievably) being in receipt of AA is not a qualifying criterion for a blue badge. How ill does one have to be?

  • Hi Rosiee,  I agree with you its quite ridiculous really but if you apply through your local council you should qualify with the fact that your mobility is not great.

  • Hi Rosiee, I'm afraid you're a victim of a recent change in legislation. Until the recent change, anyone receiving PIP who reached state retirement age still received it after state retirement age. However I believe you can receive attendance allowance or universal credit instead. Not sure though if you can apply for a motability vehicle.

Again you can contact MacMillan for more information.

  • Hi

I have a car. I would just like to be able to park it near to places I am going x

  • When I got my terminal diagnosis, the nursing team just dealt with everything. Before I knew it, someone was phoning me up to confirm my PIP payment and a blue badge surprisingly came through the post. I never applied for one. I thought that must be standard for anyone with a terminal (less than 12 months to live) diagnosis. I am sorry that you’re having to do all this yourself.

  • Ah, that changes things. You would need a higher PIP award to get a car but as for a blue badge it should be relatively easy to qualify for a blue badge. Try contacting citizens' advice but MacMillan I think would be better.

    Good luck Rosiee
