Hard to believe

Hi everyone, I have mentioned in the hobbies thread that I like to do jigsaws. I have been doing them since childhood and when I was about 10 or 11 I completed one of the toughest ones I've ever done and certainly at that time, the toughest. It was a picture of a stained glass window in York Minster I believe, from memory. I was as proud as a peacock and my family were amazed at my feat.

If you live in Northern Ireland which I do, you'll maybe understand the following. In the mid to late sixties in the province it would be fair to say that you were either from the loyalist (Protestant) or nationalist (Catholic) community in general. Now I was in the former and my dad was so very loyalist.

Having completed the aforementioned jigsaw I became aware that it was one half of a duo of stained glass windows and I wanted the other one. I told my dad and I was taken aback by his reaction. He told me in no uncertain terms that no way was I getting it. Why? Simply because the companion jigsaw was of a stained glass window in a Catholic church!!!

Thankfully life has changed a lot in my country although there are still bigoted enclaves here and there. If by chance anyone knows where I can buy the once forbidden other jigsaw I would be so grateful.

  • Good morning TVman, try the website Zazzle or Etsy, you might be in luck there. Love

  • Wow, I can’t believe there was such division among people in Northern Ireland during the troubled times. But I think sometimes human just love have someone to hate. It could be race as that is easy to spot the difference. But in Northern Ireland is more homogeneous so people will pick religion instead. I am happy that there is peace now.

Have you watched Say Nothing ? It is on Channel 4 now. Very interesting watch.

How is Mrs TVman? How is your vertigo ?

  • Hiya Stella, TVman is so spot on. I lived in Northern Ireland for 20 years. My ex hubby was from that part of the world. Hope you are doing fine and Winston is not to put out by the cold and snow. Lilly hates it and is staying cosy in the house. Love to you all from

  • Hi Angie &Lily

Winston is doing well. He peed on Craig’s brand new fancy recliner once Hanhan went home with my parents. Craig was pretty angry Rage for a few hours. But it was all forgiven and forgotten now.

  • Hi tvman, I hope you have gained the upper hand now re your vertigo and I trust Mrs tvman is making progress. I grew up in England in the sixties and seventies and was aware of the Troubles from an early age. Looking back, I don't recall our teachers addressing the issues or helping us kids understand. They probably just stuck to their syllabus. It was only in the late seventies/early eighties that I had some idea of what it was about beyond the sensationalist headlines in the tabloids. Good to be living in better times now. It would be terrific if you manage to fulfil that childhood dream!

  • Hi Stella, you wouldn't believe what was happening between rival religions. I lived in a predominantly loyalist estate and there were very few Catholic families, just 3 or 4. As well as playing football with many people of my age I used to be friends with a young Catholic boy and we saved money for records. Indeed the first one that both of us bought was Lena Zavaroni's Ma he's making eyes at me from Smyth's records in Belfast city centre!

No one else played with my friend, I was the only one. It's a wonder that no one tried to stop me from playing with him but I wouldn't have listened anyway.

  • Hi Stella, no I haven't watched Say Nothing but on your recommendation I'll have a look.

Mrs Tvman is getting on well, she's using just one crutch now and much more movement in the operated left leg. As for me,  I haven't had an episode of vertigo for over a week which is good for me nowadays. Hope it comes to an end sometime soon.

  • Hi Patrick, I haven't had an episode of vertigo for over a week now, I hope it's in the past. Mrs Tvman is recovering well, just one crutch these days and movement improving slowly but surely.

As for your teachers, I'd guess that they didn't understand what was happening as most ordinary citizens like me were mystified as to the reasons why murders, shootings and bombings were constantly taking place.
