Good morning all,

I am a newbie here. Just diagnosed with terminal cancer and about 8 months to live. No terrible symptoms yet. 67 year old bloke living in London.

Just wanted to say Hi,

Blessings,

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin

Just a thought on holidays.... we decided, as I can't drive very far or walk very far, to book a coach holiday in June. I wasn't sure if I would be able to manage, but it actually worked very well. We stayed in Belfast, and went on different excursions every day. I was able to walk, or stop and rest, at every place we visited. The other holiday people on the coach were lovely and friendly. I never thought we'd go on one of these holidays, but it worked so well we booked ourselves onto another one with the same company, for September! I hope I'll be able to do it!

You haven't said what your circumstances are, but there are several companies that specialise in 'singles' holidays too, so there's no excuse!! My motto is to make the most of it whilst I can. If by September I'm not up to travelling, it doesn't matter, but at least I have it to look forward to!

I wish you well, and have my fingers crossed that you can try some chemo if they think it may help you.

  • Hello Helen,

Thank you for your kind words. I guess life is what it is and so far everyone has been supportive. I think acceptance is eventually the answer to everything.

    Blessings,

    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin, The reason I said incurable is because if you do decide in going for a break somewhere then you may want Insurance for Travelling. If you say terminal the answer will be "sorry we can't help" iFonts say incurable then they will give you a quote!

We know it really makes no difference what you call it but I believe where there's life there's Hope, and if treatment gives you even an extra month, you never know what they will come up with regards further treatment within that month.

That is what I said to our adult children when My oncologist said if I was lucky and it worked, I may have 4-6 months extra! I started the Trial in Aug2013 so I am well past even my second sell by date!

  • Hi

Welcome to the group, you will find friendship and support here. We are a good bunch as you have found out from the previous replies. I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis, it must be difficult to accept and scary to contemplate but it comes to us all, as you will know from your hospital chaplain role. I hope your faith is a comfort to you.

  • Hi Kevin, Just wanted to find out if you have checked out any breaks yet. Honestly, it's what keeps me going, I think we all need something to look forward to!!

Candysmum, Just wanted to say Hi, I don't think we have chatted before. Also I'm curious where your tour is going in September. We have booked 2 nights in Irvine for this month, 3 nights in Ayr for September and 4 nights in Oban for beginning of October. We live in Scotland and all our breaks are in Scotland. They are not very far in the car but the further away, the more nights we have booked. Up until last year we used to book 2 weeks in Spain in October when it's not too hot but when we went away this year in February to Spain (as usual) we had to come home early because I was unwell and ended up in hospital for 16 days. I didn't want to end up in hospital in Spain!

That is why we are staying in Scotland but we still look forward to our regular breaks. We had thought of a bus tour but I am either in a wheelchair or using elbow crutches (if it's not far) but I find the stairs on buses too high! Has anyone else found that?

  • Hi Anndanv

My September holiday is based at a hotel in Gairloch, with trips to Inverewe gardens, Skye, Ullapool etc. We'll have to stay in Glasgow the first night, then meet the coach the next morning. I live right at the bottom of Scotland, near Stranraer. Its lovely, quiet, but a NIGHTMARE if you need support with health issues! Never thought about it when I moved here, but just getting to the hospital for treatment, or seeing my oncologist in Edinburgh has meant that I've had transport provided by St Johns. I feel very guilty about this, but i couldn't have managed my treatment without them.

Back to Kevin's post. I wonder if a cruise might be possible? Everything is provided on board, there are lifts inside. You can take up on the excursions or not as you wish. Maybe others on here have experience of cruises? I've never done it, but there's always next year!

  • Hi  and

Our next break is booked for October, a few days in Leith. The apartment we've booked is right on the riverfront. The bus for Edinburgh is just on the main road. Looking forward to it.

  • Hi Candysmum, I have been on several cruises and the two problems I had that got worse as my mobility got worse, was going out onto the deck from inside, they have double doors, that are not very wide and also have a step out. The second thing was getting off the ship especially if they had to use a tender! Other than that we enjoyed it and the staff were very helpful!

Kevin if you are thinking of a cruise, it is possible to find out if they use a tender at any port before you book!

  • Hi Kevin, only just seen your post, I would like to welcome you to our incurable sight. I must admit I didn't fancy chemo, but was offered immunotherapy , which has given me alot of extra time. You say you like traveling but find it difficult now, why not write about your travels, I know a lot of people on here would enjoy them and give our travelers ideas where to go.  I don't have a bucket list. I'm just happy to wake up every morning  and decide what we will do we do go Wales alot and Southport every week. Love Ibiza my family live there so that's our next big one . Do be kind to yourself and keep posting. xx
