Any advice on looking for a psychologist?

Hi.

I've been in remission for just over two years, and now that I feel safe the feelings are coming out. I'd like to find a therapist to help me through them, but I don't know where to start. Luckily I have savings, so can go private rather than waiting two years or so. Just to complicate matters, I'm in Spain, and although I speak pretty good Spanish, it's easier to speak English particularly when I'm emotional.

I'm thinking of looking for an online therapist. Does anybody have any experience with online therapy? Does anybody have any advice on how to choose a therapist?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Sheila

  • Hi Starlady7,

It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I saw your post and wanted to offer some support whilst you are waiting for other group members to reply.

I’m glad you are reaching out for some support, our Community groups are safe and supportive spaces to chat to others, ask questions and talk openly about how you are feeling.

Alongside accessing peer support in our forums, the Macmillan Support Line teams can provide emotional, practical and financial support. They’re available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm (UK time) on our overseas number +44 207 091 2230, send an email or use live webchat.

They will be able to help you find the support you are looking for and offer a listening ear when you need to talk about how you are coping.

Please don’t hesitate to email community@macmillan.org.uk if you have any questions about the above or need some additional support. You can also send a private message to the Moderator account.

    Best wishes,

    Megan

  • Hi Sheila

I don’t know if you found a therapist. I was in a similar position to you and accessed a UK based online therapist through BetterHelp.

Hope all is ok.. it’s difficult being an expat in these circumstances.

  • Hi Cathy.

Thanks.  I'll look into them. I'm feeling much better now, but I may well have another round of feelings to work through in the future.

Yes, being an ex-pat does complicate things.
