Hi,I'm like everyone, struggling with what is going on at the moment!the uncertainty of this Corona virus issue&who's high risk..etc.what is best in what should I do?I'm 2&half years out of my treatment for throat cancer.thankfully the cancer was dealt with&there's no sign of it sense! unfortunately I have a lot of side effects from my treatment,so still have a bit of a journey to go.im in a much better place then a lot ,but don't know what to do at the moment!I feel a bit useless at a time so many people need help.i have worked in the past as a cleaner, driver&fork lift driver.all things I believe would be useful at this strange time.but am I someone who has underlining issues?besides side effects,I think I'm ok.Am I been silly &thinking I could help(maybe not in a full time basis, but could do few hours a day)or would I be putting myself&others at risk by trying to help?I know I'm not the only one in this position,so any advice would be welcome!thank you&stay safe everyone!

  • Hi  and welcome to the Community. Yes it is very confusing and you can see at the end of my reply what I have been told following my long treatment journey - hit my Community name to see it.

You need to do what you need to do to protect yourself and others.

The government has issued this advice for those who are particularly vulnerable due to their health. This includes advice for carers, advice on hospital or GP appointments and mental wellbeing. This is being updated regularly and we would recommend checking this on a daily basis if you are worried about taking the right steps to stay safe.

Some of us may be experiencing confusion or concern over doing what’s best for ourselves and our loved ones, and it is important to follow advice given by medical professionals first. Our Macmillan nurse specialists in Ask an Expert are experiencing an increase in demand due to coronavirus (COVID-19) enquiries. If you have a concern or question about coronavirus (COVID-19) in relation to your cancer experience, please consult the current Ask a nurse discussions page first to see whether a similar question has already been posted. This helps our team of specialist nurses support as many people as possible.

Please remember that if you are experiencing any new or worsening symptoms, you should contact your GP or specialist medical team as your first priority.

    All the best.

I am now over 4 1/2 years post my second Allo Stem Cell Transplant and even on Wednesday past my Late Effects Nurse said “……think you have just come through your Allo SCT again and take exactly the same precautions as I did then........” so I am basically back into a few months isolation controlling everyone I come in contract with and where and what I do

She also said ”……. once a blood cancer patient always a blood cancer patient"......... "All the treatment you have had has indeed had a long lasting effect on the effectiveness of your immune system even although your bloods are ok with a few at the lower limit range of acceptable, like any virus you are at risk but this one we don’t know how a post Allo SCT Patient will react - let’s be safe and not sorry”
