Reversal or no reversal?

I had an LAR and an ileostomy on 6th September and met my surgeon yesterday who told me that I can have a reversal in the spring of 2025. All I see anywhere are negative posts regarding the outcome and I'm beginning to wonder whether to go ahead. I really would like to lose my ileostomy but am worried that I'll be much worse off if I go for the reversal. My surgeon says there's a risk but although I'm quite old, 78, he reckons that as I'm slim and fit (getting fitter every day) there's a good chance that the outcome will be good. What to do?

You made me smile with the clenching comment

Hold  on. ha ha, yes that’s all in the training

I know what you mean. I hit the Lopermide if I have too many treats. It works for me.

    Have a good Christmas

  • Hey everyone! I wanted to share that I’m currently living with an ileostomy after having a rectal tumour removed. I’m a bit anxious about what things will be like after my reversal. I had an ultra-low anterior resection, and I’d love to hear any thoughts or experiences you might have! Thank you! Any advice would be great

  • Hi Laurence, Looking like we're in he same boat. All I know is that my surgeon has forecast that my reversal will be in the spring of 2025. Do you have a date yet? From what everyone says the process of a reversal isn't as simple as a walk in the park but, with a little luck, there should be a happy ending. Nothing in life is for sure but I've decided, based on the comments so far, to give it a go! Good luck to you on this part of the journey!

  • Hi Ann

I had a read of this-what a great thread and I’d not seen it before. It should be really helpful for others in the group.

  • I won’t use any expletives in reply, but plodding on too! My own version of Santa (the man from the mobility shop) is bringing me a power assisted wheelchair on Monday to replace the mobility scooter that neither of us can lift into the car now.  That’s the height of my seasonal joy!
