Help with LARS

There are quite a few options to help manage LARS and it seems that few of us are offered all that are available. You may wish to discuss these with your specialist nursing team or your GP.

Here’s my list:

Loperamide - the go to tablet! But in tablet rather than capsule form it’s quicker acting. Useful for when it seems you’re glued to the throne.

Ondansetron - many of us will be familiar with this as it’s often prescribed to reduce nausea. But in a low dose, it can slow down the bowel and improve regularity. (I’ve swapped up to 10 or so Loperamides a day for one of these on alternate days!)

Normacol - strange to mix a “laxative” with the above, but it can assist with regularity.

Nortriptyline - a medicine usually associated with our mental health can, in low doses, help reduce those “phantom” demands for the loo that can be so frustrating.

Sphincter exercises - persisting with these can improve regularity and control.

Rectal irrigation - can be used daily or to relieve constipation

Glycerol suppository - another option if you miss a day, very gentle!

Rectal plugs - to give you the confidence when away from home, on a journey and between pit-stops

Over to you! What have you found helpful?
