Hi,
I had health issues that led to having an ileostomy and mucous fistula created back in November and have had several health issues since (not stoma related)
I am finally returning to work with a phased return and am hoping this group are able to suggest ideas and ways to help me move forward and get back to feeling ‘normal’
thank you in advance!
Same here. The fistula is covered with a circular flap and produces next to nothing. The loop ileostomy does all the work. I have had them more than 3 1/2 years now and have adopted a regular routine for changing the pouches every 48 hours.
Heavy lifting is a no-no and I am now used to asking for assistance in stores and garden centres, etc. despite being 6 foot tall with broad shoulders. I simply explain that I have had surgery and heavy lifting is not allowed. Never had a problem.
When driving I stop every couple of hours, get out and walk a little. I've had close-run leakage issues when driving for 4 1/2 hours bent up and not moving much. Flying is the same.
At work take regular breaks, tell your manager and close associates of your condition and use the 'disabled' facilities with a clear conscience. I cannot think of any problems that might stop you from being normal. If you have to wear company livery you might ask for a looser fit.
