I have a urostomy stoma and I’m having a port put in on Thursday because I’m having difficulty having a cannula put in my hand for immunotherapy. I’m worried how long it will take how painful it will be and will they let me get up to empty my stoma bag
Hi Susb
I haven’t had a port, as I had a cannula for my chemo, but from my understanding it’s not a long procedure to have it inserted-I thought it took about an hour?
I’m not sure if you are asking whether you could empty your bag during the port insertion procedure or while you’re having the immunotherapy? I hope someone who has had port can come along and help with their experience,

Thank you Sarah I have had chemotherapy and immunotherapy for just under two years so unfortunately my veins are bad and very difficult to cannulate I was just worried really about the port being put in and if I can’t get up to empty my bag I would hate it to start leaking
Hi Susb
I completely get where you’re coming from-any leak is horrible. If I were you I’d ask when you go to have the port fitted what the arrangement would be if you need to empty the bag. I didn’t have stomas when I was having chemo, but was up and down like a yo-yo to use the loo, dragging my infusion stand with me!
I hope it goes smoothly on Thursday and you get some reassurance about your bag emptying.
Sarah xx
