Life after Stoma

New here,

I am 2 years post stoma reversal, my bowel still today is not functioning properly, I could go to toilet 10/14 times in a day, its like a little bit will pass but my anus will close up even though there is more to come, I get like a stinging pain there, then roughly 10 mins I will end up going again, it goes like that every day, I get pain in stomach and unbearable bloating, I tend not to go anywhere too far now in case I need to use bathroom as i could be in there for 10 mins at a time, I have no pushing ability so I have to wait for gravity to work.

Has anyone experienced anything like this after reversal, consultant wants me to see dietician first, and then look at washing bowel out every 2 days, if still nothing works I could have to have stoma again

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi  and welcome to the group.

I have a permanent colostomy so reversal will never happen for me and I can’t give any advice to you unfortunately. However, many of the group members have been through the reversal process and come out the other side, so I hope that they’ll come along and post with their experiences. It’s a long time for you to still be living with bowel issues post reversal so I hope you can get some support and answers from the group.

  • Hi Tipplass

    Sorry you’re going through this.

My Stoma was removed 2022. I prefer to call it that as I find referring to the op as a reversal gives the impression that you will be reversed back to how it was before

For me that’s not possible my rectum was taken away with a four in cancer which I am so grateful that they were able to perform it. But it’s obvious that I haven’t been reversed.
Where the stoma was is scar tissue which can cause issues with things sticking there. Things can move fast in my system as I haven’t got as much pipeline

Anyway I have good days and bad days.
    Mostly good.

Diet causes issues. So if I have a take out Chinese I’m going to be in the  next day, as it can be fast and furious

lopermide is my go to help

Good luck with the dietician please keep us updated as it’s so helpful for others

I find my diet has to be low fibre still

  • I had a temporary ileostomy before my treatment for upper rectal cancer… had radiotherapy, chemo then tumour removal & bowel resection in 7mths. Had the stoma for 15mths and it was reversed/closed a week ago.

I know it’s still early days in recovery but just wondered if you have any top tips to get through this part?! After tummy cramps and many trip to the loo yesterday, I was starting to think how easier things had been a week ago!!

Am sticking to low fibre and easily-passed food at the mo, the poo varies in amount, consistency and frequency!

  • hi AlbaH

The first few weeks are tough.
I read many posts here to help.
I found be bulking my diet helped.
Also spending extra time in the toilet and trying to hold and control.
It seemed impossible to start but with practice it became better

The Ileostomy stoma I found fast and sometimes furious and once I was back to processing my food , well it was challenging and my bottom was sore.

Keep going. Check out some posts here

  • Thanks Ann, enjoyed reading that post you shared too!

How long did your stoma wound take to heal? Surgeon said it varies but my scar doesn’t look much different since the op, nearly 2wks ago.

  • Hi AlbaH

Glad you enjoyed the post from Soultrader.

    Makes me smile even now

My wound took ages as it heals from the inside out.
    IT gave me the willies!

    Looked like I’d been stabbed.

My consultant took the staples out as my Dr was frightened of it ( didn’t give me much confidence telling me to pack a bag and go to A&E )

My consultant intervened  he saw me and explained that it takes time to heal inside and it would need a nurse to dress it. They sometimes pack the inside to encourage healing. I had a gel

We had to go to a clinic as my rural surgeries nurses were not trained in that type of wound

Once a qualified nurse took over it healed well

    Good luck with it all

    Best wishes
