Preparation for hospital stay

Hi, I'm new here.  I was diagnosed last month and 3 days before Christmas met with my surgeon who explained that because of the position of my tumour, he will remove my rectum and I'll have a permanent stoma.  My stoma nurse should be ringing this week to arrange our first meeting but I thought maybe you could help.  Obviously I need to take nightwear and they say comfortable day wear to the hospital.  I live alone so need to be organised.  What would you suggest? What will be comfortable?  Nightdress or pyjamas? Skirts or loose fitting trousers?  It sounds trivial as I type this, but I feel the need to be in control of at least part of this process.

This has been the hardest period of Happy New Yearing I've ever had, my emotions are all over the place.  I know I'm lucky I can be treated, but I've not yet processed how my life is going to change for the coming months and my body forever.

Thanks in advance for any tips,

Jill

  • Hi Estelle

i am having the same operation as you i go in this Thursday so hopefully we can chat on here. I am feeling very nervous but this cancer needs to go.

  • Good luck, I have just done my bowel prep...if you have to do that....put some cream on as soon as you can before hand.  I am a bit anxious now but just want it done so I can move forwards. I did over pack to start with BTW until my daughter said split the load in two bags and have second as backup bag someone can bring in after a couple of days. Also means no searching thru for things as I have packed it ready. Am ready for whatever tomorrow brings now. Good luck to you and yes it will be good to share our journeys. Kind regards and best wishes Stell

  • Hi no I have not got to do a bowel prep which surprised me. I am feeling very anxious but know it has to be done. I will be thinking of you too we have both got this better to get this cancer out.
