I was diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer in August 2022 after attending A/E with none of the expected symptoms but generally unwell and constipated. Had colostomy formed and have had 4 sessions of chemotherapy. Had scans in January and was amazed to be informed there is currently no evidence of cancer.

I am hoping to travel abroad and wondered how best to manage my stoma on a flight and whilst staying in a hotel.

Thank you in advance. Tigerman

  • Hi Tigerman,

Had my stoma when we flew to Europe, talked to airline about taking my stoma stuff with me in as extra cabin/hand luggage & was told could take it ss a medical bag with a certificate to say you have a stoma. This can be downloaded from cancer UK or from your stoma team if you still have one. We made sure we had an isle seat incase I needed the toilet & we booked a meal in advance. No fizzy drinks as this could cause your bag to swell with gas.

The hotel,  if onsuite, should be no different from being at home, just watch what you eat. It might b a good idea to carry a small spray of smellies or deodoriser if you eat out a lot, for the toilets.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your holiday. Brilliant news on your diagnosis.

  • Hi

This thread has tips we have gathered together and you may find a good starting point for advice-

Holiday Tips, Planes, Boats and Trains

I personally always take some puppy pads for the bed in the hotel, but I have more risk with 2 stomas!

Hopefully you will find what you need in the above thread but if you have any specific questions, please just ask. I travel abroad pretty regularly and have not had any major issues.
