Hi- I am supporting my husband who has an ileostomy and is undergoing ongoing cancer treatment after two operations. The ileostomy( we call it Homer) works well generally but I am worried about ongoing nutrition I understand that with an ileostomy the gut has no microbiome. I can’t find any info-does anyone have any sources  on this? I have all the usual advice but white everything does not feel healthy to me.
thanks and good wishes to everyone!

  • Hi there.
I drank the pro biotic when I had my Ileostomy though I realise they’re not as beneficial as the capsules. I didn’t take the capsules until I’d had a reversal and my bowel was back in use

In time and slowly introducing I managed a really healthy diet when I had Whoopi micro salads leaves radishes and cucumber. I stayed away from all skins and seeds but my diet was colourful even with the low fibre beige food. Chicken, spinach anything easy to eat

One thing I really looked forward to was my first English breakfast. I really enjoyed the tinned tomatoes. I never thought I’d say that but I really did

I found my body lacked serotonin which caused me to feel low. It’s a very difficult thing to replace no matter how much peanut butter I ate so I have tablets from the doctors that gave me the boast I needed

    Love the name Homer.
    Take care

  • Hi ElizaViloet,

So, is Homer after the Greek poet because he spouts a lot, or Simpson for much the same reason!! Like Ann I didn't take probiotics until I had the reversal, I don't think they help at this stage. I had a very helpful booklet from Dansac, makers of stoma products, which gave good advice on diet and I am sure (although I couldn't find them) that Macmillan have food books as well.

I think it is a question of trying to get a balanced diet and just avoid anything that could cause a blockage. I was on chemo after the main op and the oncologist just encouraged healthy normal eating.  If you ever consider supplements I would check with the oncologist first. I have to say that after the second round of Capox my wife was more interested in what I ate than I was, I suspect that you are the same.

Hope all goes well for your husband, John

  • Thanks Ann! All the best
