Codeine for a high output stoma

Hi,

I have been prescribed codeine to help with my high output stoma, along with X1 daily omeprazole. After just a couple of days I notice a difference as regards consistency (still monitoring the frequency side of things) and while this is good news, I am concerned about using this long-term and the side effects, including addiction. I have started on a low dose (1-2 X10mls per day) to see how I get on but can increase this to 4X10mls per day so long as I tolerate it. which sounds like quite a lot to me.

Has anyone got experience of using codeine long term and/or any advice to offer, please?

Thanks.

  • Hi Ozboz

Its really good that you’re having help with your high output. That can be exhausting.
I was like that early days and they gave me Loperamide to thicken and slow. I didn’t get on with it and thankfully managed to thicken and slow mine down with food.lThe dry cracker before bed worked a treat for me. However that was early days

Have you had your stoma very long ?
Do you have a permanent Ileostomy/colostomy?

Which would mean long term use.
If it’s working I would stay on the low dose.

I was on codeine for a couple of months with a back injury. I became  very constipated and needed strong laxatives so maybe that’s what you need at this time

So although I’m unable to give you my experience with using codeine when I had my stoma I can say that my bowel function slowed down when I took the pain meds. I was in so much pain though I took them plus the laxative

Hopefully someone will come along with the same experience as you.
