Stoma Bag Leakage

Hi I’m Chris and my Husband had had his Ileostomy since January without any problems other than changed to a convex bag to fit over his hernia better , he’d normally change every two days and luckily never been an issue until past couple of weeks when without warning massively leaking from around the disc at the side near the top - in fact even had one bag totally drop off and land on the floor when he was walking to the bathroom , spoken to Coloplast who say they’ve no issues and had Stoma nurse out who suggested cutting out the ring to larger size but not made difference and last night leaked twice within two hours, only difference has been he is currently on a course of Chemo on a week on week off cycle so we are upping the loperamide tablets to see if this helps but to be honest it seems neither Salt rings or bags sticking as they have in past and we are back to using the extra large extra stickers as well but not helping HELP anyone any ideas please ???This has all knocked his confidence and understandably won’t go out and we’ve three hospital appts this week so any advice appreciated greatly …only other thing to add is that skin looks very shiny almost a build up but nurse says it’s just where the bag has left an impression . Thanks for reading

  • Hi Cressie

ive got an ileostomy but I didn’t have chemo. Could be the chemo has caused diarrhoea?

There’s lots that have had the same and will be along soon.

It’s a confidence hit when the things won’t stick. I had it two weeks after my op. It hit me for six. I have convex that you can attach a belt to. I wore that a while and really made sure my skin was dry. The sensitive type pouches can have less adhesive so they can loosen. When my skin flares up I do wear them but they don’t stick like my normal order  Hope things settle soon

    PS My skins shines too

  • Thank you for advice - we’ve currently gone back to flat bags and slightly smaller cut out with extra large stickers attached too - you are right about chemo effect so upped the loperamide and keeping an eye on things , also for time being ditched the hernia belt .Stoma nurse dropped in one of those belts with bag attached to try but not brave enough to use it yet !!
good to know he’s not the only Shiny on the site Thumbsup

  • Hi. I found that my stoma wasn’t proud enough to get the output in the bag which caused pancaking and soreness. So keep an eye on his skin around the stoma.
The convex bags with the belt attached helped to keep the output in the right place. I didn’t wear the belt long as every time I pulled my knickers down I grabbed the belt. Not exactly the right way to do it. It did work really well when I had diarrhoea I also used Eakin slims.
Think shiny skins good to stick to

    Hope things settle
