Hallo to you all, I am a new member.
I have read some of your comments and think this would be the place I could talk about some of the problems we come up against and may be help others as well myself. I am in Spain at the moment where we spend the winter, although now being out of the union we can only spend three months at a time, the Spanish and the European Union, are making things very difficult for the English, so not sure how much longer we will be going.
I recently had a heart attack and had to have a stent put in and I have now found, may be with all the blood medications I have too take, that my stoma bleeds quite a lot, particularly around the edge where it joins to the skin, this is not new as you may know, it is very delicate, I was thinking it may be all the blood  medications is the cause as it’s very difficult to stop the bleeding, I wonder if anyone has had a similar problem and if they have any advice.

Thank you

Dave

  • Hi Dave,

My stoma only bled around the edge when it was first healing and also when I had the pouch a bit tight and it was rubbing as the stoma moves. The stoma powder that I was given normally helped to dry it.

I expect you are on blood thinners with the heart problem so perhaps not so easy to control. If the stoma is starting to detach is there any danger of a prolapse or is it just from one area. If it is caused by rubbing can you use a seal around between skin and pouch?

I think you may need the professionals to answer your problem, I hope you manage to sort it ok.

    Stay warm in Spain!

    John

  • Hi John,

Thank you for your message, I hadn’t thought about a prolapse, that doesn’t sound good, it’s only in one small part at the moment, will keep an eye on it though. I am back in the UK on Thursday, and I have been talking to my Stoma nurse and have made an appointment.

Many thanks John, it’s  much appreciated.

    take care. Dave

  • Hi Dillon75

Welcome to the group. I’m not an expert on blood thinners and the stoma however I have a stoma that did bleed early days and my husband has blood thinners with heart condition and a very small cut can cause bleeding problems.
Thankfully you will have the support of the Stoma nurses. Hopefully you have some barrier supplies to protect it til you can see them.

Enjoy those beautiful blue skies of Spain (my brother lives there) Sadly it’s grey and dark here

  • Hello Artsie Ann

Thank you for your comments. I went to the hospital at Cartagena, but nobody spoke English, it was 11pm so was not able to get a translator, all they did was a blood test, said that was OK, and called a taxi to take me home, they was not a lot of help at all, as I said, we have been spending  the winter here for the past 12 years and what we have experienced, since Brexit, it has changed, there is not a lot of help or sympathy from the Spanish, they go out of there way to make things difficult for the English, a lot of our friends who have homes here are selling up, it really has changed.
We will be back home in England on Thursday so hopefully I’ll get to see my stoma team and get some help, not sure if we will be returning to Spain, it’s not a good place to be poorly.

Again, many thanks for your reply it was very helpful.

    Take care Dave

  • Hi Aldan

Thank you Aldan for your comment, It looks normal at the moment there is just a small bleed in one part where it joins to the skin. I have not had any problems in 3 years, only since I have been taking these blood thinning medications after I had the heart attack.

    Many thanks, take care

  • So sorry Dave.
I was devastated by brexit. My sons in Ireland and my Brothers resident in Spain managing properties. He’s noticed a shift from English buying. I visited both twice a year feeling we were in same unit. Now it’s like they’re in different worlds haven’t seen them for two years with Covid and my hubbys health issues.
Good luck with your travels and keep us posted with the outcome it’ll help others experiencing the same

  • Hi Artsie Ann

Yes it’s getting really difficult here now, lots of new rules, and as I say the medical situation is also a problem, especially in hospitals, one doctor we saw when we went into A&E as my wife had broken her finger, would not even talk to us, he just kept saying, Translator!! Translator!!, fortunately there was an English translator with another couple who for €50 came to our help, and in our local clinic there is a Spanish doctor there that speaks English but you can’t request her, we was told we have take the next available one, so you have to take a translator with you,

    Many thanks

    Take care

  • Hi Dillon.
I know what it’s like. My husband had serious AF in Lanzarote. That was blue light terrifying front row seat. Their English was Insurance before we save his life. So we used to visit David my Brother in Orhuelia Spain. He used to get us a beautiful villa all was good. When my hubby had another attack he took over. translators English speaking doctor Perfect until he was in high dependency. Boy he didn’t get fed or updated. We have a Scottish Spanish speaker friend. Wow she’s amazing. She was in there and he got treatment. She’s from Glasgow married a Spaniard who left her to it. She learned through living there. Such a character. . That was before Brexit. We haven’t been since. Not sure we’d get insurance now. He lives in an area that’s known as little Britain so he’s not fluent but knows what is being said. I’m hoping to see them all next year
