Parastomal Hernia

Hi all, my name's Lee, 58 yrold man just joined this forum, who has survived st.3 rectal cancer following treatment and operation 3 years ago. This left me with an Ileostomy that was due to be reversed but then couldn't be due to a small leak in the join from surgery so I opted for an end Colostomy that took place a year ago now. So I'm still getting used to living with a permanent stoma now, but had to have another op in June of this year to remove a very large Incisional Hernia I was left with. This went very well and I am now feeling well and looking a lot better, i.e. I don't appear to be 6 months pregnant any more!

Anyway - it seems I now have a small Parastomal Hernia under the stoma area. I'm seeing the consultant again soon but I understand from the stoma nurse this is extremely common and may just have to be gotten used to. I'm hoping it won't increase in size but wondered if anyone else has experienced this and how you have coped if it has developed? I really don't want any more surgery and assuming there is no pain I think I can live with it.

Cheers

  • I have a small parastomal hernia on mu colostomy. I was also told it was extremely common. My surgeon recommended living with it unless it is causing problems. He told me that there was a very high likelihood of recurrence.

I wear a hernia support belt to prevent mine from getting worse. You may need to ask your stoma nurse how to get those. I'm in the US and not sure how these things work there.

  • Thanks, that's good to know. I do have a support belt but rarely wear it as I don't like covering the stoma but will give it a go again.

Just realised I said 'end colonoscopy' in original post but meant Colostomy of course, Rolling eyes now corrected.

  • I started with a small parastomal hernia after my colostomy 4 years ago and, because I didn't wear the support garment every day, it grew and grew! Please don't make my mistake, wear your belt as much as you can! I do now, a bit late, but better late than never!
