Parastomal hernia operation

Hi. I am going into hospital on 5th March to have my hernia repaired. I live alone, so would appreciate some advice on how I might cope once I am discharged. My surgeon told me I would not be able to lift anything heavier than a kettle of water for 6 weeks. I would be interested to know how people have managed, how much pain might I be in, how long before I will be able to get out for short walks etc.

Thanks

Kim

  • Thank you Sarah. I  know it was due to Mr Harrison having to deal with an emergency and it isn't anyone's fault, but it's very frustrating to be so close and then being sent home.

  • It’s a lot to cope with mentally, that’s for sure. I was warned my surgery wouldn’t go ahead if they didn’t have a bed for me in HDU and I think that stressed me more than the thought of the surgery and having to wait longer. Let’s keep everything crossed for the 24th!!

  • To be fair, they were really apologetic and as I was there for 7 am and had nothing to eat since teatime the day before, they offered me a drink and something to eat and a taxi to get home. I only live 10 minutes walk away from the hospital, so at least I didn't have to worry about transport and could wait for breakfast until I got home.

  • Hi Kim,

It’s great to hear that you’ve already received a new surgery date through. I’ll always remember my Mum going in for heart valve replacement surgery, only for her surgery to be cancelled on the way down to theatre due to an emergency that had been admitted via A&E. It was such an emotional drain for everyone, including the nursing staff, so I completely understand your disappointment.

On the positive side, it means that you’ve now got time to go and buy that litter picker lol. I’ve been using it every morning to pick up the post from the door mat. It’s the best £10 I’ve ever spent.

My recovery was going really well until yesterday. I’d just sat down to watch a bit of tv when I had to run to the kitchen to be sick. It was just so odd. I didn’t feel sick but the sheer volume of liquid that made an appearance was shocking. It was like all the water I’d been drinking had just sat there.  I’m just wondering if it’s anything to do with my abdominal drain being removed on Thursday. If it happens again, I’ll get back in touch with the hospital. I was quite proud of myself though. I had the forethought to grab a cushion on the way to the kitchen so I could support my abdomen whilst I was sick.

Today has been a much better day. I’ve walked a mile without any issues (except for being cold - I wasn’t expecting that wind chill!). The stoma nurse has visited too and my prescription has been changed to a slight convex bag. The new bag feels a little strange but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

I’ve got everything crossed for you Kim and really do hope that it’s 3rd time lucky. Take good care of yourself in the meantime.

  • Hi Liz.

Thank you. I'm going to town on Friday to try and get a litter picker if I can. I know Boyes sell them. Sorry to hear about your sickness yesterday. I hope it turns out to be just a minor setback. You are doing well walking that far so soon. We have a cold wind today too, along with hailstones and rain. I have everything crossed for my op going ahead this time. Take care

  • Thanks Liz. I'll be very disappointed if it doesn't go ahead. I'm feeling a bit nervous now so I just want it over with.
