Hi - I have an ileostomy and have been advised to avoid nuts. However I love a butter chicken which has ground almond in - is it safe to use that?

  • Nuts are OK as long as they are chewed thoroughly to reduce them to tiny fragments. Ground almonds are very fine indeed and shouldn't cause a problem. I eat smooth peanut butter without difficulty. Undercooked root vegetables present a greater risk of blockages!

  • Thanks Dulac - I’ll give it a try!!

  • I used to have jaw ache from chewing nuts they became a slog to grind down.  Needs must I just did it sometimes

My biggest miss was sweetcorn. Oh how I love sweetcorn

Im reversed now and it can still block if I’m not careful. So I eat little and not often.

    Good luck with the nuts.

  • Artsie,

Cashew nuts seem softer than peanuts/brazils/hazelnuts and quickly render to a fine paste. Haven't tried walnuts and their skins yet, nor chestnuts.

I found beansprouts problematic and also salad leaves, unless it's an Iceberg lettuce. Coleslaw is given a quick whisk with a blender to reduce it to a paste. Sweet pickle and piccalilli contain too many hard pieces of root vegetable, but the blender again sorts that out.

  • Marks and Spencer red onion chutney is my favourite and is very soft  can be enjoyed any time

This post is making me hungry and realise I need to visit M&S
