Travelling with stoma bag products?

Going to Spain early Feb and just reading through the Hollister booklet it says you can't take the spray adhesive remover with you?

Is that correct and if so what do you use instead to help remove the stoma bag?

  • Hi

It’s not correct in my experience. I use a 50 ml size spray and take one in my hand luggage and one in my case. I’m going abroad again on Tuesday and will be doing this again. It’s never been an issue on any of my previous trips, travelling through different airports and using various airlines. I’m not sure why Hollister would say this to be honest.

Hope you have no issues and enjoy your trip!

  • Can someone tell me where to get the document to show I have a stoma, when travelling? I’m hoping to start going to the USA soon but I’m dreading the security part!
    Thanks,

  • I got mine sent to me from my collorectal nursing team. Filled the small booklet out and got my GP to sign it.

Hollister was the one they sent me.

  • Thanks Sarah, I'm going to order some removable wipes just in case but thought the same as you. Will get in touch with jet2 to clarify.

  • It’s usually Jet2 I go with, and it will be them next week for me. You are allowed all sorts of sprays in cans like deodorant etc, so our spray isn’t any different.

Were you aware that Jet2 allow a free extra bag for medical supplies you can take as hand luggage? I have done that in the past.

  • Hi Moira

I took a letter from my CNS the first time I flew with stomas but have never bothered since and don’t have the certificate. I have to say in all my travels having stomas has never been an issue with security anywhere but I’ve not been to the USA!

Is there anything you’re particularly worried about in terms of going through security?

  • How do you ask for that? I'm going to carry a small bag extra with supplies and hope the card I've got from my gp will be enough

  • I’ve just got visions of being marched into a room when they see the bag on X-ray! Maybe I watch too much TV but I don’t want to be accused of drug smuggling at 74! I’d heard you could get something that explains you have a stoma,

  • Maybe I should have asked when I was at the clinic! I don’t see them much these days as it’s 3 years now!
    thanks,

  • I have special assistance to fly-ie use a wheelchair etc, so I found the info on the Jet2 site when I was looking into that, if I recall. You don’t need to be having special assistance to have the free extra medical bag allowance to my knowledge. Jet2 have a medical form, but I’ve never completed that, just called them up to discuss what I need in terms of assistance.

My letter from my CNS confirmed that I needed medical supplies, but no member of staff asked for it, nor did they look in my bag-it just went through the scanner as normal. I just told the check in staff it was medical supplies and it was fine.
