Hi,

Hopefully soon going on a short holiday to Spain. First time since bowel cancer ending with a stoma fitted.

Question is, I will need to take my small bag with me holding spare bags, wipes but more importantly removal spray.

Do I need to get any forms/paperwork to get through security with it?

  • Hi

Glad you found us-I did put links in the cancer chat group where we talked about travelling, where there’s a lot of advice. The first time I travelled with stomas I got a letter from my CNS confirming I needed to carry supplies in my hand luggage, but was never asked to show it, and have not been asked since. I contacted the airline I was flying with and was given a free extra cabin bag allowance for my medical supplies.

I usually have a small can of adhesive remover spray with me on board and this is not an issue. It is classed as a liquid so I just pop it in my clear bag of liquids as it’s 50 mls which complies with the rules. Your bag will just go through the scanner along with any other hand luggage, and personally I’ve never been questioned on its contents.

The security scanner picks up that you are wearing a stoma bag, so you may be asked about this. I’ve been taken to a private room with a same sex member of staff who has patted me down, and once I’ve been asked to briefly show my bags. I’ve always found the staff to be discreet and understanding,

If there's any other questions you have, please ask away. It turned out to be easier to travel with stomas than I had imagined, and I’ve never had issues on multiple trips.

    Sarah xx
