After nearly 30 months of having a loop colostomy, I didn't think my little friend had any more shocks for me,! How wrong can you be? After being quite painfully active this morning, I passed a load of mucus from the rectum and there's  quite a bit of blood when I wipe!  Now I know mucas happens but is blood common,? I can't ask a stoma nurse as I've been discharged and the only way to see someone is with a GP referral! I had an ERCP procedure on Tuesday to remove a gall stone and I'm wondering if that could somehow cause it! It's given me a heck of a lot of wind! Any ideas please, you lovely people?

  • I meant the stoma was painfully active, not me! Rolling eyes

  • Hi Moira

Goodness, that doesn’t sound pleasant at all! Sorry I don’t have any similar experience as mine is an end colostomy, but hopefully it’s nothing of too much concern.

I do have experience of the ERCP though-I’ve had that done twice recently-first time failed but second time shifted an enormous stone from my bile duct! I didn’t feel at all well after my first procedure-really nauseous and turned out the procedure gave me pancreatitis, which is a known risk of getting this done. My output was horrible-it turned grey! Took me a while to get over it.

Hope someone else with a loop colostomy can help with some reassurance and that you’re feeling better soon.

  • Thanks Sarah,

I only had the one experience with ERCP and like you, I had a huge stone removed, with, hopefully none of the dreadful things you suffered from,! I was warned about wind but for some reason I didn't think of it affecting the stoma! I thought I'd burp a lot! Instead it's agony when the stoma is active, all wind, and now this! I know I should phone the GP but most of the time they know nothing about stomas! I've got a hip replacement coming up in 3 weeks so I'm trying to avoid any other medics! Silly, I know, but I feel I've had enough! The bleeding seems to have stopped for now but if it happens again, I'll phone!

Thank you so much for your reply, I hope you're fully recovered by now!

  • Hi Moira

Its lovely to make contact though wish Brooke wasn’t giving you so much trouble

Can you phone your nurses discharged or not surely they can advice you and your GP can refer you? I know what you mean about GPS mine is frightened of me and my old Whoopi. He did everything to avoid me. Hilarious really

The procedure that you’ve had can you contact someone there I’m sorry I’m not much use?

I don’t like you being left high and dry. It’s not on

Or phone here now they definitely could advice you

    take care

  • Hi Ann,

Lovely to hear from you too even if it is to complain about Brooke! I felt fine on Tuesday but a bit groggy, same yesterday, but today! The wind pains when Brooke was active were terrible, then the mucus, followed by blood! To be honest, it probably was not that much, it was just a shock! Now it's when I go for a wee and wipe! For weeks I've found it painful to sit for long and I was wondering if it could be the cyst I had over a year ago, in my rectum! To be honest, this was never mentioned to me, either before that day at the hospital or since! My after care has been shocking really! Wonderful when I was receiving treatment but non existent since! I know if I phone GP now, if I can even speak to anyone, they'll tell me to go down! It's 2 miles away and I just don't feel up to it! If it continues I'll phone one of the helplines on here! At least the nurses here know what we're talking about!

How are you doing Ann, has life gone back to normal without Whoops?

  • Hi Moira

I think calling here is a really good idea. They can advice you

Life without whoopi…… well I had a blockage one month after the reversal I could almost imagine her chucking as she blocked my dinner  24hrs in hospital all was fine  my diets not changed much still low fibre and I’ve gained weight

I was picked up on my yearly CT lung cancer primary  I’ve had the lower lobectomy and segment on top of right lung so I’m recovering well all things considered

Thursdays is breakfast club so todays a good day

Hope you have some good advice here

    Take care

  • Hi again Ann,

I'll definitely ring someone but probably tomorrow! I just wish these wind pains would stop but they are something I WAS told about! I'll let you know what happens!

That Whoopi, always a naughty girl! You've been through the mill a bit Ann but glad to hear you're doing ok now! That's all we can hope for really with a few laughs along the way!

    Take care,

    Moira x

  • If you’re going to suffer a serious issue with the ERCP my experience is that it comes on really quickly afterwards so I’m sure you’ll be fine as far as that goes.

It’s really hard to know who to phone for advice, isn’t it? Most gps and medics in general seem to have no real knowledge of stomas unless it’s their particular area. I was admitted for 8 nights when I had my bile duct blockage and the amount of times staff said to me oh, I see you have a catheter in! No-I have2 stomas and no catheter at all as I don’t have a bladder!

I hope it doesn’t happen again for you-you’ve got enough to think about right now. All the best for your upcoming hip replacement-a friend had this done a couple of months ago and she’s had a brilliant result.
