Hi, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer January 22. Had radiotherapy & Chemotherapy April/ May. Had colostomy August, now have permanent stoma. In October Had to have more Chemotherapy which lasted 3 months. The thing is only the last few weeks I am getting really bad pains in my legs especially at night in bed. Is this normal? It's unbearable at times & all my gp does is give me painkillers which doesn't help. Contacted my colorectal nurse 2 weeks ago about this & just waiting to hear back from consultant. Many thanks

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you're experiencing unbearable pain in your legs. I have no idea if this is normal after having treatment for rectal cancer but maybe you could chase your colorectal nurse/consultant explaining how bad the pain is.

You might also want to post this in the bowel cancer group to see if anyone there has any experience with this.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Neilga, thanks for this - good to get a heads up on likely complications.  I hope you mange to get some relief - the disturbed sleep will be difficult if nothing else.

I'm looking at a similar treatment pathway - head Chemo/Radio in 2020-21 then surgery/stoma last month and more chemo on the horizon.

Good luck with care and treatment.
