I have had my stoma for over two years, and it is erratic. I had ibs before the stoma, so think this is why I have had problems. This evening the output just exploded, so quickly and had job to contain it. I have a closed bag too. I haven't eaten anything different. It really upsets me, and just lose my confidence.  I   I am seeing my doctor tomorrow as my stoma nurse has contacted them. It's just this evening has really upset me. It has happened before. I take one or two imodium a day, to try and keep it under control.

  • Hi. How did you get on at the doctors? It’s so upsetting when it seems to just explode isn’t it? Was your output ok before the explosion? There is a sort of diarrhoea that you can get when you’re a bit constipated - I know that sounds a bit daft but it can build up behind the ‘stool’ then leak around it or it may be that you were a bit blocked and then it’s suddenly released?

Hope your doctors been able to help? Could it be worth cutting the immodium down to every other day maybe? Sorry I haven’t come up with a magic answer but really hope it settles back down for you

    Take care

  • Hi. Many thanks for your reply.  My doctor has recommended some medication, to help with stress which I suffer from, also ibs. Hoping it will calm things down. The medication should be here tomorrow.  The output varies, for no apparent reason.  I try not to take the imodium, but get worried if it I need to change it too many times. Also knowing what to eat is a problem. Knowing what won't upset it.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi Rita,

I've had my colostomy 2 years, it was fine for the first 6 months or so, then it went haywire! I would have explosive episodes, I was frighten to change.my pouch because it just wouldn't stop! Then nothing for 3 or 4 days, then the whole darned cycle would start again! My colostomy nurse kept insisting it was diet related, it drove me mad! Then they'd say to try a drainable pouch but that wasn't solving the problem! I'm still in the dark but my colorectal Nurse prescribed Fybergel and that's helped a bit! Hope you manage to get sorted soon and if you find out what to eat, let me know because I'm still floundering!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Moira

Thanks for your message. Sorry that you are struggling. I worry when I change my pouch, on case it explodes. Thankfully it's only happened a few times. If we knew why..  It very difficult to know what to eat, on case it upsets it. I take one or two Imodium a day, to try and keep it okay, but whether that means ot stops it, so then it could build up. Glad that Fybergel helps.  I use closed pouches, as I wasn't happy with the drainable ones. The ones I use have a good seal to them. The medication the doctor had recommended, suppose to calm you down, and possibly slow the output down we will see. As long as it doesn't have any side effects. Anyway all the best to you. It is so worrying though!!!. Rita

  • hi Emperor, I've had both a colostomy and an illiostomy and with both needed to take eight immodium a day. Two before meals and two before going to bed. I suffered no illeffects. Had a stoma since 2011. X.
