Phantom rectum feelings

I'm really struggling with phantom rectum, my family think I'm joking or winding them up when I say that I feel as though I need an emergency poo every 10 minutes even though I have an ileostomy bag. The sensation gets really out of control when I'm out and about and it's had a terrible effect on my self confidence and how many times I actually leave the house, the only real remedy I know of so far is actually sitting down on the toilet mimicking the actions of doing a number two that seems to help for a hour then the feelings come flooding back, the only real solution was when I was in pain with my Cancer and have a huge melon size hernia directly under my stoma which caused considerable pain I'd take an opioid quite a high strength one which would take away the phantom feeling all together  but surely can't continue taking those, does anyone else have this problem too!!!??

  • If you go to the stoma link and use the search function ( magnifying glass in the top right hand corner ) you can type in “phantom pains “and see the experience of others who have also been through it .

  • Hi there Big cally

Yes I had it and I found it very disturbing as most of the time it woke me up bringing back those feelings I had when I had the rectal tumour causing pressure

I passed a little mucus but nothing really significant  it did improve in time

    Take care

  • I have this frequently. I have had my ileostomy for a year now. It is often accompanied by a discharge of mucus. My consultant says this is normal, as although the rectum has been removed,  there is still what is called a rectal stump which allows this to happen. Can I ask about your hernia, as I am now having some pain around my stoma area. I wonder what you have experienced regarding this. All the best

  • Hi Steph, I wouldnt wish a hernia the size of mine on anyone, if you can imagine carrying a bowling ball around glued to your stomach exactly underneath your stoma site that's what it's like in size comparison. I'm sorry I sound so negative about it but it is what it is. I get a considerable amount of burning like pain it can be quite severe most of the time but I'm on strong pain meds to keep that feeling at bay, it makes everyday life a nightmare especially with an ileostomy bag as mine always crinkle around the edges even at the point of application so I'm prone to leaks and the escaping of horrendous smells which is really embarrassing especially sitting in a crowd. There is no quick fix of a hernia especially as it protrudes pushing through my stoma sight, I've been told I'm in a catch 22 position where in order for me to get the hernia sorted I would need a complete resection at the same time, I personally feel that having a hernia so big has really dented my confidence as I cannot hide it even with really baggy clothes, it's also a complete nightmare if you have to really cough or sneeze as you feel as though it going push more out. I'm really Sorry to have depressed you Steph but that's my daily experience.

    BIG CALLY 75.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. I do hope you can get it sorted. Keep strong.
