First holiday abroad with Bubbles ( my stoma)

Hello ,

I would just like say I had my loop ileostomy 9th August this year. Decided to go on a Caribbean cruise a couple of weeks ago, as you can imagine I was a little worried about the long haul flight and also swimming for the first time. It was no Bother at all. No problems with the flight , had a travel card to take with me for security, again no problems. As for swimming, I had the little stickers to put over the filter on the bag, loved every minute of it. So if you are worried about going on holiday, you should just give it a go. Had a great time , did me the world of good, feel fully recovered now from the surgery. Just waiting for the next step now. The reversal.

My colorectal nurse gave some great advice , to use mum roll on deodorant under the stick on part of the bag, didn't do it the first day and it was very red with the heat but then used the mum roll on deodorant after that - no problems .

  • Glad you had a great time.thanks for the tip about the deodorant.does it only work with roll on ?

  • Congratulations on your trip.

I didn’t know about  the roll on tip. That’s a great one for the summer months here too.

  • Hi

Well done on braving the trip! Really pleased to see you had a good time, and thanks for the tip about the roll on deodorant-I hadn’t heard that one before. I just got back from Lanzarote last night after a week away with no major issues, and it’s lovely to get away to the sun.

  • Hello

My colorectal nurse said a few had been tried but mum roll on was the best, I found it amazing.I used the unperformed one, my pharmacy ordered it in for me.

  • Thankyou for the tip.it will come in useful

  • Great to hear you managed a trip away. How do you go on with travel insurance for foreign trips? xx

  • Where are you thinking of going are you travelling to Europe. As it’s covered with EHIC/GHIC not sure if you feel that’s enough.
    Happy holiday planning

  • Hi

The community has a dedicated group for travel insurance and if you click this link it will take you there-

    Travel Insurance

I would recommend having a look through, and then phoning companies direct rather than completing a form online as it’s easier to give a full picture. Personally I would not want to travel anywhere with only the EHIC/GHIC card as while this offers you some cover, it doesn’t offer the full range of cover you might need..you still need to think of things like lost luggage, anything stolen etc.

I’ve had many holidays abroad with my 2 stomas and been fine-I have a GHIC card but also full travel insurance cover through my partner’s bank account. Good luck with getting a nice trip organised.
