I had a colostomy 2019 die to diverticulitis all went well but reversal has been delayed due to pandemic and a triple bypass ,i`m now due for reversal September 2022 , i`ve talked to others who`s reversal l went well and are back to normal but a few suffer badly with upset stomach and the runs bit i know they have poor diet and drink beer daily ,is it their own fault or is it normal for some to suffer ?
Hi Sanchez. It’s very hard to compare experience as it can be different for everyone. People who have their stoma due to cancer may have often had large sections of their Bowel removed and this, along with where the tumour was, can affect their reversal outcome. Having some of the bowel removed can shorten the length of time that the stool has passing through the system meaning that less liquid is absorbed and the stool can be loose and runny. If you’ve only had a couple of inches removed then this may not be the case.
Yes diet can have an effect. I know if I have salad then I will have diarrhoea and there’s a large price to pay for a chinese with a few beers but if I’m not leaving the house then I just put up with it. You may find that taking a small amount of immodium helps especially in the early days as your bowels can take a while to settle down but be guided by your consultant on this.
Have you seen the section above called Stoma Reversal and LARS? The LARS won’t be relevant but the posts about reversals may help?
Hope it goes well
