Mucous leakage from bottom.

Before I had my Stoma operation ( Loop Colostomy )  I was told by my surgeon that I would have leakage from my bottom and it would be mucous.
She was not joking.
I find sanitary towels do not soak up the oily discharge and so it causes a uncomfortable situation regularly with wetness.
I have taken to wearing a nappy for my own confidence.
Any advice or tips gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

  • Hi I'm back folks and I have an update with regards to leakages from my bottom.  I too have asked myself what is the point of my Stoma bag at times. I am presently experiencing the sensations of something wanting to pass out of my bottom. Sometimes its just mucous but I have had poo and the occasional solids. It really makes life seem difficult at times. I wear a large pad with another type of pad on top of that in an attempt to soak up any discharges.
But the pad on top does not soak up the mucous and leaves me feeling uncomfortable at times.  I place a double layer of toilet paper on top in an attempt to solve the problems but with little effect so far.
At least it appears I am not on my own.

  • Hi Chromeplated,

I have been prescribed loperamide as, with the ileostomy, the diarrhea in the bag is frequent, and a serious problem. Low fat diet is the advice. I try everything! At the beginning I could only have root vegetables, potatoes for me mainly, and all sorts of carbohydrates: pasta and cheese (luckily i love that & there are many ways to cook them) then I started cautiously with greens...one at a time to see how my stoma reacts. There are foods that will immediately cause a reaction., that i avoid completely...sad but I have no choice.

Eat rice and cooked carrots for a nasty diarrhea, my granny's remedy, I have used it on my daughters and even my dog Slight smile, it always works.

I still am having problems, but am getting used to avoid certain foods.

Are you taking loperamide? (=one brand name immodium). i couldn't do without it!

    take care,

  • Hello Chromeplated and Bri26.  I seem to be a 'control' for this experience as I have no issues at all with diet or fecal density (for now!).  But I do have the issue with mucus, which is occasionally mixed with blood if my tumour wakes up.

I am trying a pair of Bodyform perioid pants.  Only one cycle of wear'n'wash so far, and not yet without loo-paper wadding, but but they are comfortable and hold the wadding well.  They appear to absorb from the saturated loo-paper successfully, but that's not the mucus 'as leaked'.  I'll give feedback when I know more.  They are quite expensive, hence just the one pair in case they give no real advantage.

  • Good morning Bri 26, my diet was very mixed and varied and it was not a problem like it has been over the last few days. I take Imodium and last night I took two before bed time. First time waking and it was okay with a very small amount of watery discharge but the second time when I got up it kicked off again. Yesterday there was a solid from the back passage which I have experienced before. We were going for a meal today but that is dodgy now but I will see how it goes. I take Cosmocol mixed with water and a little Lime juice cordial to make it palletable. It has softened my stools in the past, which has been a problem with very hard stools before taking it. Softners prescribed by the doctor did not work but Cosmocol seems to help.

  • I look forward to your update. Good luck with your trials. Chromeplated.

  • Good luck for tonight, don’t let the « beast » stop you from enjoying yourself!

You could check with your nurse, but mine ( & the consultant confirmed later) told me to take 3 loperamides each time,, at leat 1/2 hour before/ after food. I can have up to 4 times / day if necessary.

As for laxative, when I had a blocked interstne on the right but diarrhea through my stoma  , they told me to take Laxido … it seemed to work.

we can only try till we find the right solution. Now that I have the loop ileostomy,  no more evacuation throught the back… the only positive of this dreadful thing.

    enjoy tonight outing .

  • The beast did not stop us from enjoying our meals. We both enjoyed them but I left a little bit myself

  • Well done!  Glad you had a good time.

We've been invited to a party - five hours on the Thames on a large party-boat.  Speaking to the operators they say there's a loo on board but although we said 'yes' some weeks ago I've got grave misgivings for all sorts of reasons (not least that it's agolden wedding so there will almost certainly be other guests with 'issues').  Gung ho 'just do it!' doesn't work, does it, and has the potential to mar everybody's afternnoon.

  • I was on tender hooks all the time but I must admit I am sat at my computer without actually having been to the bathroom to check myself. I sometimes wonder if it's possible for the brain to cause problems.
    Could it sometimes become psychological?
You think things will happen and then it does.

  • Yes, I think it does.  I'd bet you've just felt the need to use the loo!  It's interesting that you say 'sat' at my computer; sitting down relieves the urge, but then when I stand I usually need to race to the loo.  I really think this boat-trip is a bad idea.
