Loop Colonoscopy.

I was told and read that people with a Loop colonoscopy can experience the occasional occurrence of poo from the back passage.
I would appreciate anyone who has the same type of Loop Colonoscopy as me, letting me know their experience with that situation.

  • Hi .I had a loop Ileostomy and the nurse explained that some of the output can get into the redundant loop part and work it’s way through and out through the normal channel. She said it’s totally normal to pass small amounts of poo and mucus and just to sit on the toilet until the urge has passed. I found it was worse if the output had collected round the stoma rather than dropping down into the bag.

If you feel like you’re passing too much poo then give your stoma nurses a ring for reassurance

  • Cheers Karen for your reply. Presently the leakage is quite often and I am always changing my pad etc.

I hope it will slow down a bit as its only 10 days since the operation.

  • Might still worth running it past the nurses if it doesn’t ease up over the next couple of days?

  • Aww thankyou  - what a lovely post to wake up to. It’s all stuff I’ve been through myself when I had my stoma and a lovely guy who is no longer on here called Ian aka the Bodach was an amazing source of knowledge and experience and he got me through some panicky moments.

Having said that it’s 5 years since I had my stoma and products change (and my memory isn’t great although I blame that on chemo brain!) so having people on here with more recent experience is great.

    Take care and hugs back

  • Hi Karen, I certainly agree with Artsie, you've helped me so many times in the last year! What I'd like to know, when does the leakage stop, if ever? 13 months after operation and it's still happing about once a month!

    Take care,

  • Hi Moira and good to hear from you again. I think the mucus leak can unfortunately go on indefinitely. The bowel continues it’s natural function of producing mucus to ease the passage of stools - normally we wouldn’t notice it mixed in with a stool - I can’t remember when or if mine stopped or if it came out when I was having a wee so I didn’t notice.

If the discharge is ever green, smelly or has blood in it then you need to contact your nurse as it may be an infection

  • Thanks Karen, I had a feeling it was an indefinite problem, still, it's a small price to pay really! What a really good and helpful article that is, it explains everything! I'm speaking to my stoma nurse tomorrow so I'll chat to her about discharge too!

    Best Wishes,
