I have been reading that a lot of people take immodium to slow down output. Is this necessary for most people with an ileostomy?
The last two times I took immodium for a stomach bug, I had severe chest pain for several hours. The same thing happens if I take codeine.
Hi
It depends on what operation you are having. Although the op may have same outcome some patients need incision and keyhole some just keyhole some just robotic. Really don’t worry about that whatever you have just to have that cancer in the bin you won’t be worrying about pain. They will sort it. You can say you don’t want morphine there’s choices each is an individual.
Hope you hear soon
take care

That’s really good news
If you click on my name and read my bio. Mine was six hours. A friend of the family had robotic her recovery was so fast. Mine not so much. But I’m absolutely fine and so relieved to have that tumour out.
Exercise is so beneficial and eating well.

Hi Debbie62,
I was prescribed Immodium post surgery for a high output stoma and I was taking a lot of them as well as Omeprazole.
However, I began to think after several months that they weren't making any perceptible difference, I decided to stop taking it for a week before I had a review with my surgical team and discuss it with them. There really was not difference when I stopped taking it and the surgical team member agreed that I should leave off taking them and then try stopping the Omeprazole after a couple more weeks.
I then had an appointment with a gastroenterologist because of the high output issues. He told me that Immodium doesn't work with ileostomies, especially if they are higher up. It works well with colostomies, apparently. The Omeprazole is also unlikely to help.
When I took it I never had any chest pain or other side effects that I noticed but this was all post-op.
I had morphine post op and stopped this at the earliest opportunity as it messed with my head too much!
Hope this helps and best of luck with the surgery
