Hi
I have a stoma for urine. I've had the stoma for just over a month & only rarely have leaks. 2 night's ago, I woke to a wet patch on the bed & the bag seemed to have been leaking all around. I had been laying on my side, partially on the stoma bag & feel I may have moved or dislodged it while turning in bed.
Is there a waist band to protect the bag that people use & what is a good brand please?
Hi Coojee. I’ve no experience of a urostomy I’m afraid but your stoma nurse may be able to help? I’ve also attached a link to a recent post and will tag a couple of people who may have some advice?
@SarahH21 and KidneyBeen are you able to help please? x
Thanks for the tag Kareno62
Morning Coojee I would recommend speaking to your stoma nurse for advice in the first instance. Those people I have known who have used one have had 2 stomas, but these bands do need to be properly measured for. They are expensive, so you don’t want to make a mistake with ordering the wrong size. I haven’t bothered as I think they would feel too restrictive for me personally and I felt it was more important to deal with getting the right fit of bag, and correct products to minimise any leaks. The support bands are for support as I understand it, rather than something to stop the bag leaking.
I am only 5 weeks post op, so have no experience as yet of a stoma bag support belt. In fact I have an appointment in 2 weeks time to get a measurement for one! I want this for extra security, when I return to the golf course. I don't think I would want to wear it in bed, as the drain pipe to the night bag sometimes disturbs my sleep, when I roll over, and wouldn't really want the added restriction of the belt.
I have had 3 leakage episodes to date, all happened with the flat adhesive pad type bags, none with the convex flange type I am using now. I think the problems were caused by the orifice cut out of the bags being too big for my stoma, so that the urine could make more contact with the adhesive seal. The acid attacks the adhesive, and gradually works its way outwards, until it escapes, which can be a bit of a disaster!. You can see this happening as the area around the stoma goes cloudy as the adhesive is being dissolved.
So I always look carefully for any signs that this is happening, and do a bag change if it shows the seal is deteriorating. I have actually gone 3 days without a bag change to test the safe duration, but usually don't go more than 2 days, which works quite well for me. So 2 nights max and change every other day is my routine.
