Tips please on Attaching Bag so no Leaks

Help please. It’s driving me nuts I cannot seem to attach my bag tightly to the edge of my Stoma which then pancakes or leaks around under the bag and burns my skin.

After a serious burn I changed it daily to bathe and calamine, barrier spray or Eakin slim. I don’t use anything but water to cleanse

This is not ideal as I’m wasting my equipment but needs must.

Could it be too many Christmas treats. I do seem to have a little too much tummy weight at the moment?

Or is it just me doing something wrong?

My provider recommended trying a different type of bag to be honest they looked exactly the same until I tried removing them. They stuck fast and broke up making changing a challenge  I’ve got some samples for sensitive skin from my nurse but had the same issue, they pancaked.

Maybe my Stoma shrinks back as I move about?
She’s quite proud when I clean her

My Stoma nurses aren’t available at the moment and I hoped that someone could just say how they have overcome this annoying problem.

  • Hi No.I don’t use powder

I did wonder about calamine. I will experiment

Sorry I’m late to respond think internet went down when I was travelling I thought I had posted this nearly three hours ago

    Many thanks

  • Hi Artsie, sorry to hear you are still having problems. I found that my stoma did move about a bit and change shape. I only cut bags each day. I used the Coloplast seals and moulded them right up to the edge of the stoma. Calamine helps soreness but must be dry and dusted off before fitting anything on top and the same goes for powder. I used Protect barrier spray.

Because of the irregular shape of the stoma area I still used to get a slight leak under the seal  just around the stoma so changed the bag daily but what I used meant it didn't cause me undue discomfort.

Hope 2022 turns out to be a good year for you, John

  • I understand what it's like and I had the twins for a short time .Phone your Stoma nurse You might need a new fitting     Kissing heartAlaine

  • Thanks John

I've just caught your message. Sorry late reply I’m away.
Really helpful. Think I’ll keep changing daily until I have new fitting by nurses. I’m not able to do it myself seeing it properly is not the easiest so I’ll leave it to the experts. I may cut them myself too as I think they look different cuts which isn’t helping.
Hope you have a healthy good 2022

  • Hi Ann

Just a thought when you said your eyesight isn't too good - have you tried a Pelican ModaVi bag?  It has a really big viewing pane and the flap lifts up and hooks over the top of the pouch so that you have both hands free to make fitting easier.  Nice clear plastic too and no annoying velcro strip stuck in the middle of it obscuring the view.  Your nurse might have a sample or you can get them free online from Pelican to try. My sight is hopeless in poor light so I use a wee torch when changing just to get a better view.

    Good luck x

  • Aw thanks BlueBlue. I haven’t tried them. I will ask my nurses

I have a travel three sided magnifying mirror adjustable. I can’t see my stoma properly without a mirror that helps the  placement. I think it’s a combination of user error and change in shape.
Thanks for all the support  This groups wonderful

Im anxious today have appointment with surgeon Wednesday. Always get collywobbles  before appointment.

  • hi Artsie hope all goes well for you on Wednesday. My Stoma shrunk after a few months and had to cut the stoma smaller. I use stoma belts which I order from my Stoma suppliers. A belt secures the bag and keeps it in place.

I wear leggins a lot as they're the most comfortable and don't press on the stoma bag like jeans and trousers do which means the bag doesn't pancake.

I also get six pairs of support pants a year from my Stoma suppliers which are wonderfully supportive and they're free.
