Medical Insurance for Travel

Hi BlueBlue. I think I would personally feel happier if they were aware of it just to be on the safe side. I’m going to tag latchbrook who runs the Travel page to see if she can advise? Is there an option to add it in say an ‘additional comments’ box or something online? I’ve attached a link to a document below which is handy to have if they wanted to pat you down or search you as it advises them that you have a stoma in lots of different languages

Thanks for tagging me Kareno62 but unfortunately I don't have any experience with whether an ileostomy needs declaring to your travel insurance company or not. 

Like Karen, I would be inclined to make them aware so that there's no chance if you need to claim that they could turn round and say you weren't covered because you hadn't declared the ileostomy.

I've just taken out travel insurance myself and had to ring the company after completing the application online to check a couple of things with them. They were able to immediately confirm that one thing didn't need declaring whereas the other did. This meant I had to pay an extra £2-50 but I'm now completely covered.

You could join the travel insurance group and post your question there to see if others have had to declare having one. If this is something that you'd like to do clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there where you can join and post in the same way as you did here.

Thank you Kareno62 and Latchbrook for your replies.  I knew someone on here would come to the recue.

I had tried phoning the insurance company again earlier but still couldn't speak to a human being (frustrating) so have bitten the bullet and updated my info online.  Added the ileostomy as an extra condition.  The questionnaire just asked why it had been carried out and was it over 12 weeks ago.  They already had all my cancer answers so I didn't need to repeat that.  The good news is that I wasn't charged any extra which really did surprise me as I was more than prepared to pay more just for the peace of mind!  As a very nervous traveller at the best of times, what with a fairly new stoma + COVID I'm a bit up to high doh with the whole process.  Husband is desperate for the break though after a rubbish 12 months and this holiday has been postponed twice already.

Thanks, too, Karen for the info on the Stoma travel certificate.  Yes, I have one of those from the Stoma nurse. I think I must have a metal hip that I know nothing about the number of times I've been pulled over - either that or I just look very guilty!
