I have a water soluble enema booked Friday. I am quite worried as I still have rectal pain 4 months after my LARS. I take paracetamol x4 daily which controls the pain but if I leave it the pain is quite bad. Anyone any suggestions or advice for my appointment. I phoned the radiography dept and they said they didn't offer sedation and it doesn't hurt, having had so much so far I don't believe them !
Hi Carog, sorry to hear that you still have rectal pain, that sounds like something you should be talking to your surgery team or nurse about.
I had a LAR but fortunately didn't suffer from that. But, regarding the enema I assume this is the leakage test to make sure the original join is ok prior to offering you a reversal. I had one and it didn't hurt. It was a bit messy as they pump the enema up you and it has to come back out, so take your time after it and stay near the loo. If you have any absorbent pads to take for the journey home that might help.
No one at the hospital warned me and most of mine ended up on my car seat driving home. It was a year after the original op and I hadn't been advised to do the pelvic floor exercises!
I am sure that the procedure will be fine for you, it may even show up a reason for your pain.
Hope it goes well for you, John
Dear John, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have discussed my continual pain with various nurses and doctors but nobody seems particularly interested. I have read it can last for 6 months which means only one and a half months more but some people continue to have pain particularly after the reversal ! I'm going for the reversal because it would make life easier but if it's a disaster I guess I'll have to have a reversal of a reversal. I read your story and so glad it's all gone well for you. I do find it strange I haven't had any scans since my chemo. Interesting you went to Guy's as I spent 6 years there working !!
Take care, Carog
