Hi all,
I’m almost 4 weeks post op for an anterior resection and an ileostomy (which is meant to be temporary). I’m not feeling good about the stoma but trying to manage it, however I have soreness around it where the stitches still sit. I’ve sent pics to my stoma nurse and that’s what she thinks it is, she thinks they are tight - she will probably take them out, although she can’t see me until next Wednesday so I think I’ll have to grin and bear it.
I’m wondering if anyone else experienced this? It’s like little red blisters where the stitches go into the skin and I’m worried they could become infected by the stoma output and/or further irritated by the adhesive flaps of the bags? Otherwise, day before last I started getting stinging pains - not all the time, and it’s almost like an ebbing, pulling sting. Although when I changed bag yesterday, it didn’t hurt to the touch when cleaning around the stoma. Could this stinging be from the stoma’s movements when active, pulling on the stitches?
Would love to hear any comparable experiences - thank you so much.
Hi R_Blackman,
Although I didn't have your problem I can confirm that my stoma could swell on occasions and that may be causing a drag on your stiches. If you have an appointment on Wednesday and it doesn't get any worse I would try paracetamol if it is too painful and keep it clean. If in doubt you could perhaps ring a nurse here.
Cheers, John
Hi R Blackman
I'm 2 weeks post surgery. My stitches were also very tight and very sore and I had all the same worries as you about infection. I had them removed on Wednesday and it really did help relieve the soreness. The skin around my stoma is still sore so as John suggests I take paracetemol every 4 hours (max 8 a day) which does help especially if I want to go for a short walk.
Perhaps your stoma team could have asked the district nurse to take your stitches out or if it gets worse over the weekend you could ring 111 snd get out of hours GP advice.
Hope you get sorted soon.
Melly
I’m at four weeks similar to you.
The skin around my stoma was very red and sore causing a stinging sensation. The Stoma nurse changed my bags to convex and gave me some Eakins rings to place around the stoma before the bags. It’s doesn’t damage the sensitive skin and helps with leaks. I ran out and within a day the skin was sore again. I’ve now got them on prescription so Im hoping that it calms down. May be worth getting some advice from your nurses.
Good Luck with your stitches.
Ann
