Just been reading about iliostomy and vit B12 difficiency.does anyone have any knowledge of this.does it often occur and what would be the symtoms?.thanks
Kath
Hi Katz51. I'm not from this group and no experience of ileostomy, so maybe not the best to answer. I do have experience of B12 deficiency. I was diagnosed with pernicious anaemia which is related to B12. In my case, it is down to age, but I believe it can be caused by various surgeries. My symptoms were persistent tiredness, feeling sleepy, and breathlessness when going up stairs or hills. It is diagnosed by a full blood count test. In most cases it can be easily remedied via injection or tablets (GP said over the counter tabs no good). I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Hi Katz51,
I understand that B12 helps your immune system. We should be getting a lot from the sun (If you have seen it recently). While I had an ileostomy and after the chemo my GP put me on B12 supplements to boost up the immune system and he still says to take it now every day although it is eighteen months since I finished Chemo and ten months since I got the stoma reversed.
I'm not medical but I got the impression that it wasn't the ileostomy causing a problem, just the overall treatment.
All the best, John
