Hi All,
Well i have had my stoma for about 17 months now and mainly all is going well however I do have one small issue.
Like a lot of people I developed a small parastomal hernia and have been advised to wear a support belt, the belt I have is OK most of the time however because of my body shape and the location of my stoma it does tend to slip down after a while which is both uncomfortable and ultimately not much use, also undressing to ‘sort it out’ is obviously not always possible.
Thinking about this problem I wondered if a sports compression top would help keep the belt in place or even be suitable as an alternative for everyday wear and wondered if anyone had tried it or even had any thoughts on the idea.
Hello midlifecrisis pt2. I had an ileostomy for a year and had a reasonable sized parastomal hernia. I was issued with a support belt from SupportX which had quite a grippy top and bottom band and never had any problem with it slipping. Have you looked on any of the suppliers's sites such as SupportX for ideas? I have seen alternatives to the standard belt, different clothes etc. How tight do you wear it? I used to find that if it was too tight it sometimes didn't allow thick output to go down the bag and then it could cause a problem.
I originally ordered mine with a guard, a plastic shell that is fixed to the belt by velcro. It is really intended to protect the stoma when taking part in sports but it may be of use in your case as it wouldn't slip past the stoma. Just an idea. Have you spoken to your Stoma nurse, she/he would probably have some good ideas as well.
All the best, John
Thanks for the reply John,
The belts I have come from SupportX including one with the plastic shell which I actually found slipped more! I think the problem is more to do with my stoma location in relation to the size and shape of my stomach which means the belt gets ‘pushed’ down particularly when I am bending or sitting. I did briefly speak to my Stoma nurse about it but she suggested I spoke to SupportX when they came to measure me as they would actually be able to see the problem ‘in action’ but this just resulted in a smaller belt which didn’t really resolve the problem.
Hello again. In that case I would defininitely get SupportX to help. They do have girdles and other clothes but also offer a bespoke service. Or have a search for other manufacturers for a different type. With your idea of the compression top, were you proposing to have this goiing over the belt or under in the hope it gave more grip? I am sure there is an anwer out there for you, I hope you find the right person to give it to you. All th e best, John.
