Temperamental stoma!

I keep getting terrible diarrhoea, usually in the middle of changing stoma bag, yuck or what! So then I take anti- diarrhoea tablets, stop taking stool softeners, and yes, get constipation instead! Any ideas please?

  • Hi Moira. I've had the same happen to me when changing my pouch. I never take anything as once it has happened I seem to be okay. It isn't a regular thing but when it happens it's quite spectacular!! Hope you are doing ok after your radiotherapy.

  • Hi Kim,

I was thinking it's just me things like this happen to! It's happened twice now and I'm terrified to change the bag! I have the pouches that can empty, fine, but they still have to be changed! I seem to fluctuate between diarrhoea and constipation! I've had nothing for 3 days and now, well you can guess! I thought coming off the Chemo would improve things but it hasn't so far!

My Radiotherapy finishes on Tuesday, then it's just a waiting game, fingers crossed all the way!

Maybe I need to eat completely bland food, do you think that might help? I don't have much of an appetite anyway!

  • Hi Moira. Sorry, I thought your radiotherapy had finished. This could be causing the problem. Everyone is going to have different reactions to it.I had my radiotherapy before my surgery so my circumstances are not the same as yours. I've had my stoma for a year and a half and still consider myself a bit of a newbie. It's all a learning curve I think. Just when you think you have it nailed, something else comes to bite you on the bum!!

    Take care. Love Kim xx

  • Hi  Kim,

Hopefully after Tuesday things might slowly improve! I suppose I'm quite new to stoma life, it was only January, so I'm still learning!  I'll let you know if things improve! Thanks for your help, Kim,

I put a thickener tablet next to the stoma before putting the bag on
