Hi,I'm Jane and new to this board.I had my bladder removed a month ago and had a urostomy.I opted for the Ileal conduit rather than a neo-bladder.I have adjusted quickly to having a stoma but am still having problems with constipation.I developed paralytic Ileus after the cystectomy and had to have a nasal gastric tube fitted for a few days.I am recovering fairly well apart from the inactive bowels.I would love to hear from anyone who has had a urostomy.Best wishes Jane
Hi Jane, welcome to the online community and the Ileostomy, colostomy, urostomy and any other stoma support group and pleased to see that you are recovering fairly well from your bladder removal operation apart from being constipated.
As you no doubt know during the surgery your bowels were disturbed and moved around to remove your bladder this usually results in altered bowel habit in the immediate post operative period and the short term after discharge. This may result in constipation. I would however thought that everything should be back to normal by now, I take that as you haven't mentioned this is not causing you any pain or discomfort
If you haven't already done so I would mention it to your GP and ask if he can prescribe a mild laxative to keep everything moving.
You should also aim to drink about 2 litres of fluids per day to help flush everything through.
Gentle exercise is a good way to stimulate your bowels.
Diet plays an important part in keeping our bowels moving and would suggest that it might help if you started a food diary and keep a note of the food and drink you have each day and compare it to bowel movements then play around with foods to see if that makes any difference.
I don't have a urostomy myself but we do have a lot of members in the group who have one and I hope that you will get some more advice from them very soon.
If I can be of any further help please give me a shout out and I'll do what I can to help you.
Ian
