I am going to have my stoma reversal operation next week. I know there can be a problem with faecal incontinence, especially in the early days. Please can anyone recommend some faecal incontinence pads/pants for ladies? Most of the products I’ve looked at just deal with urinary incontinence. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi and very warm welcome to the online community and I'm pleased to see you here especially as you're about to go through your reversal next week and I hope that it is success.

I'm sure that our lady reverses will be along shortly with their suggestions on the items they used to combat faecal incontinence

I have come across this company that might give you an idea of the products available.

  • Hi . In the early days the hospital will provide you with some incontinence pads which are rather bulky but do the job. For home I would have thought any sort of sanitary pad would suffice and perhaps wear it a bit further back in your underwear than normal? Have you been practicing your sphincter muscle exercises? They are described on pages 15 & 16 of this booklet but basically mean clenching your rectal muscles as if you were trying to hold a trump in - the nurses told me that it is better to do this if you have a sudden urge to go rather than making a dash for it!

I also found it good  to have s bit of a grab bag to hand in hospital. I found the toilet paper to be s but rough after several visits to the toilet so I started using the soft wipes that they give you to wash me then putting them in a poo bag and in the contaminated waste bin. So my bag contained soft wipes, poo bags, pads, spare knickers and cream like sudocream or anything the hospital gives you.

Hope the reversal goes well - the Bowel does not like being manhandled so take it easy on the eating front for the first few days and please let us know how you’re getting on

    Take care

Thanks for the good advice, Karen and especially the grab bag essentials. I have been doing the exercises and hope they help. I think I will have to be patient and take each day as it comes. I’m a bit worried about it as I have had part of my rectum taken away but will just have to see what happens. Will let you know how it goes. It’s teally nice having a response from someone who has been through it.
