I was taken into hospital last week with an obstruction in my small bowel. The pain was dreadful and being sick hurt. I had a NG tube and a couple of stomach pumps and a super strength medication put into the tube to remove the obstruction.
My stoma exploded a few times in hospital and I was sent home and told to take Laxido a couple of times a day to keep things flowing. The thing is my stoma is a lot quieter than before the obstruction. I was changing my bag numerous times throughout the day. I spoke to a stoma nurse yesterday but she was a bit short with me and made me feel like a baby.
Does anyone know or have experienced an obstruction and what is it like afterwards?
The stoma nurse told me as long as long as I am not being sick or in pain and there is a bit in my bag, then it's okay. But I don't believe her.
Hi Lisa
Sorry to hear about you hospital visit a total blockage is not pleasant and can be dangerous but I'm glad you got it sorted out before something drastic happened strictly speaking if you have a partial obstruction food and fluids could find a way round the blockage and into you bag.
I'm sorry that the stone care nurse was less than supportive to you.
I've not had a blockage so no idea whether it effects your output when the bowel is cleared, my only guess would be that as you had 2 blow outs from stoma after the blockage was cleared is that it might take a few days to get back into a pattern with regard to normal output as it will take the bowel to settle down a bit of time to settle down.
In do hope that someone can pick up on this who has had a blockage and fill you in what you should be experiencing
Sorry not my usual help

Hi Ian,
Thank you for getting back to me and your honest reply.
After my post, my stoma had another big blow out early evening. I will continue with the light diet (again I wasn't told what that involves) and the Laxido.
The obstruction was caused by scar tissue and constipation. I get pain from the scar tissue but they won't operate as it is a risky operation and the scar tissue grows back.
Thank you for your help.
Lisa

Hi Lisa
My apologies I've been trying to get back to you all day.
I'm sorry to hear about the further blow out hopefully the rest of the day has been easier.
I don't know if you read my post on Low Irritant - High Fibre Diet recently, is this the information you are looking for.
Maybe the next time you are in the pharmacy you might find it beneficial to have a word with the pharmacist and ask if Laxido is the best laxative for you to be taking as you might be taking it for some time.
It's a pest when problems like blockages occur as a result of the surgery and the cause can't be removed because scar tissue will grow back, hopefully this is taken into account when they prescribe pain management medication.
Hope you have as good weekend as you can.
Ian
