Hi, just an update for those who are interested! Two weeks post op and I'm feeling very fortunate. Despite taking 5 days to get working again, when it finally did and got rid of all the laxatives, my bowel settled down to two poops a day of proper well formed stools, hurrah! That's the good news. The bad news is that I am suffering very badly with wind at night, so I'm not sleeping so well. Peppermint is my friend! I know that I am very fortunate that my bowel has settled so quickly: I was hopeful though as everything was good before my cancer diagnosis and during the 7 months I had my stoma I hardly ever had any problems with loose output, certainly not to need any Immodium. I also still have a good part of my rectum left so that has helped. I think that having probiotic yoghurts also helped. My wound is a 'purse string', left open about 1cm to allow drainage. A clot formed over it so I have been showering with the dressing off and the clot finally fell off today, and my stoma nurse is very happy with it. I have to continue to let the water run over it daily in the shower then dry it and replace the dressing. It's still very sore so no driving just yet. Diet wise, today I had a fruit smoothie and a few slices of courgettes and am planning on reintroducing different fruit and veg every day. Seeing my consultant on Monday for a post op check up. Good luck to any of you about to have a reversal, I hope it all goes well. x
Hi Jersey Lilly,
Thank you for your post as my reversal is imminent now and after reading the threads on here it does sound daunting after the operation. I am pleased you have had a good experience post op and it has pleased me a bit more, my fingers crossed i am the same as you but everyone is different and will go with the down side affects post op way of thinking until it happens.
i am glad everything going well with reversal i’ve had illiostomy for 5 years could have had it reversed but after reading reviews decided to keep mine as none of them seemed to have the success you seem to be having i was just wondering weather you had the same problem as me when you had the bag as just recently i have been feeling i need to go to the toilet and loosing fluids just had a lower bowel exam with camera but they say everything is ok but it still happening
Hi Bebe
Sorry to hear that you're having problems with your ILEOSTOMY.
Would you say that your output is higher than it used to be.
When you say needing to go to the toilet I take it, this to empty your bladder or is it that you feel the need to go to the toilet as if you didn't have a bag. (Tried to be tactful)
Do you have any other symptoms.
If you could let me know, maybe I could suggest something to you.
Hope to hear from you.
Ian
No never had problems with bag been good that's why I didn't do the reversal yes feel like I need to go to toilet as if didn't have bag had this at the beginning and they told me it s good that the bowl is cleaning itself but that passed but now it's come back and different I'm just losing watery jelly liquid and as this was happening when they first diagnosed the colon cancer I still feel worried even though after the check up they tell me there's nothing wrong so just wondered if any one else had had the same symptoms
Hi Bebe
I'm thinking that when you had the lower bowl examination with the camera that they disturbed your bowl causing the jelly/watery liquid to come out through your rectum if this continues for a few more days I would suggest that you speak to colectoral team and ask for advice.
Are you still filling your bag as before i.e. your stoma still working
As you're losing a lot of fluid you could also be losing all of the salts from your body have you heard of the St Mark's Solutuon that you could make up at home and sip very often during the day, it should not be gulped as this tends to make the fluids pass through your body quickly taking the salts with it and you need the salts to help the body absorb fluids.
Unfortunately drinks like tea, coffee soft drinks, fizzy drinks or plain water do not add salts to our bodies

Hi, sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you, but I see that Bodach has replied. I passed mucus and sometimes wind at various times whilst I had the stoma & ileostomy, this is normal. Follow Bodach's advice and ask your doctor if it's till ongoing. I hope it settles soon. x
That's OK I never had mucus before had like clay matter and told this was normal then it looked like i was then actually losing poo but was told as I have another tube underneath the stoma it was leaking into the other pipe but when that cleared I now have clear mucus it just seemed strange after 4 years of having no problems, but thanks knowing you had the same it s put my mind at rest a bit it's happening every day so far if it doesnt ease I will talk to the doctors again
