Hi my husband has had a complete bowel and anus removal.  He now has a stoma and I am struggling with his diet. The stoma nurse has suggested lots of things but I need some basic recipes for ordinary food. Any ideas please. Thank you. Fran.

  • hi there, my partner has a colostomy and a urostomy.. he can eat almost anything.. but avoids mushrooms, sweetcorn and fruit skins, as these seem to block him up a bit. little and often seems to be the key

    Hi Fran

The first thing I would like to say is that it may not be the food you're preparing it could be down to the operation and anaesthetic playing havoc with his taste buds and the foods tasting strange. The idea is that if any food is pushed away you leave it out of his meal plan for a few weeks then introduce back onto his plate if he eats it fine if not just leave a few more weeks.

A food diary might be a good idea as you can then keep a note of everything you offer him and his reaction to it. I like to reassure you, I don't think you need to worry about your cooking skills as I'm sure it's  to do with the procedure and his recovery.

After an operation I totally can't stand coffee for weeks after.

I take it you've got your list of foods and what happens when we digest them wind, odour etc this might help Colostomy UK - Healthy Eating

As no post from me about food wouldn't be complete if I didn't mention that everything he eats should be chewed, chewed,  chewed, chewed, chewed, chewed and chewed until it's like a paste before swallowing.

Regular meals maybe 5 or 6 per day with small plate portion might help.

But your question was about recipes and these might be of interest to you.

Go the above web site and you maybe able to download them. I've signed up but so far I've only got a recipe for Quiche Lorraine which I don't like and it's nothing to do with having an ileostomy!

    Hi Ian

Can't thank you enough for all the advice, recipes and help you have provided me with. I will certainly be having a go at some of them. It is all a learning experience for myself and my husband it takes time to get used to this different way of life. At least I know there is help out there.

    Many thanks regards Fran.
