Hi I'm 4 weeks post op to remove a tumour and create an ileostomy. I seem to get a lot of pain caused by wind. Anything I eat seems to make my stomach swell which seems to pull on stitches. I take peppermint capsules twice a day and avoid veg etc known to give you wind. it also seems worse at night and I wake up after a few hours sleep in pain around stomach and bad like trapped wind. Any ideas how to deal with this?

Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community and I am sorry you've had to reach out to us with such an embarrassing problem but I'm sure with the help of the other members of poo corner we can help you overcome this.

It's certainly not very pleasant to experience trapped wind and as you've found out can be very painful.

I take it to are chewing your food thoroughly and are keeping up your fluid and salt intake.

It's not just eating vegetables that can  cause wind other foods such as

    beans

    broccoli

    cabbage

    cauliflower

    onions

    eggs

Fizzy drinks and beer also cause wind.

Do not skip meals to try to prevent wind as it'll make the problem worse.

Drinking peppermint tea could be a help as would be not eating too late at night.

Avoid eating and drinking at the time and eating and talking at the same time both can cause wind.

If the problem persists, your GP or stoma nurse should be able to recommend a medicine that can help to reduce wind.

Keeping a food diary can be a help by recording your food and fluid intake and recording how everything reacts with you.

I have come across a very simple food diary app on Google play store which is very good if you scroll down the list of apps it's the one with a leaf in a green circle (Food diary by wecode team)

Hope this helps, I'm sure that others will be along soon with their suggestions to get rid of trapped wind.
