Hi,

I had my colostomy reversed nearly 3 weeks ago now and I am struggling to cope with the awful stomach pains I am getting. They are so bad I got readmitted a week after I left hospital. They checked to make sure I didn't have a blockage or a leak and said it was just things settling down. I live on my own and it's been pretty miserable coping with it all. As expected I've been on the loo on and off all day and I have awful diarrhoea which I am partially controlling with loperamide 3 times a day although I've had a few accidents. I wasn't expecting the stomach cramps to be as bad as this. My stomach hurts most of the time and when the cramps come they last for hours and are almost unbearable. I also have no appetite and am forcing myself to eat something because I'm losing weight. I've been sticking to fairly bland low fibre food as advised by the hospital. I'm taking the maximum dose of Buscopan to help with the cramps.

I had chemo radiation for anal cancer last year but fortunately have not had any bowel removed. Does anyone have any advice or words of comfort for me please.

    Hi Findom,

I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time post-reversal. I had an ileostomy reversal nearly 5 weeks ago. I didn’t have the stomach pains that you’re describing, but I didn’t feel great and I had lots of bathroom issues.

You are still very early in recovery. I have only started feeling somewhat normal in the past few days.

Hopefully in another week or two you will feel better.

    Hi Findom

i had my reversal over a month ago. I had a number of stomach pain issues but they have settled down. The toilet problems

still remain and will Remain for a number of months.  You have to keep in your mind that you will have had an appreciable

length of your bowel will have been removed so things will never be the same. You seem to have been thoroughly checked out

for possible blockages or leakes so it’s probable that your pains are as a result of the removal of scar tissue within your abdomen

My advise is give it time. Record a list of the pain experienced, see if it reduces with time. Also see if  it is affected with the food you

eat. If things do not improve ask to see the specialist again.

I know it is not great being on your own but perhaps you can talk things through with a nurse at the hospital.

The very best of Luck. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks Raypark, its a good idea to keep track of what I'm eating and what sets off the cramps, thank you. I've been in touch with the enhanced recovery team at the hospital twice, the second time I was re admitted but as they could not find anything so I've basically been left to deal with it. I have not actually lost any bowel fortunately, so I wasn't expecting to have so many problems.

Many thanks for your reply, its good to hear that your issues have settled down.

    Hi,

I am on another site for a cancer I now have & was looking at sites for pain relief.

I had a colostomy for 6 months then a reversal. This was uncomfortable for a while & also having to get used to going to the loo again.

I had this done 22 tears ago & no more problems once everything had settled down.

The pains are probably all you `insides` settling back into place, so be patient & I am sure all will be well.

    Lilly
